Fifty-two Object Lessons For Children In Worship
Object:
Plastic baby pins in pink and blue (Available as baby shower decorations in shops.)
Good morning, boys and girls. We have just been a part of a very happy and special occasion in the life of one of our families here in the church. We have been a part of a very spiritual experience for we have witnessed a family who has brought their child to God's House to dedicate themselves and the child to God. The parents have made a pledge to God that they will, with his help, raise their child to be a disciple of Jesus when the time comes for his/her own personal confession of faith. This is a very solemn and important decision for Christian parents to make.
Boys and girls, do you remember when your parents brought you to the church for your (baptism/dedication)? Probably not, because you were just a wee baby. Did you know that Jesus was only eight days old when his parents took him to the temple and dedicated him to God? You can read about that in the second chapter of Luke's gospel.
Well, what do you think it means to be dedicated to the Lord? (Responses -- You belong to God; you become a Christian; you will follow Jesus; you will love God. A great variety of answers will be given which may need clarification or may be the springboard for a teaching gem.)
What we do here doesn't change a person or make him or her a Christian. What it does is identify that person with the people of God in a special way. We say that we want our children to grow to be believers in God and disciples of the Lord Jesus.
Let's all think of what it means to believe in God and be the disciples of the Lord Jesus.
(Prayer of blessing on children and remembrance of the promises made at the Baptism/Dedication.)
(Give out the pins to mark the happy event.)
