Have you ever tried to watch your favorite television show or play your favorite video game while people were interrupting you? Maybe they kept getting in front of the screen, or they made a lot of noise, or they just kept asking you questions so you could not concentrate. Doesn't it irritate you when that happens?
This morning I want to talk to you about something far more important than watching television or playing a video game. I want to talk to you about our behavior during the worship service. Why do you think people come here every Sunday? (Allow children to explain their answers.) People come here to worship God. They come to show God how much they love him by praying, singing, giving, and by listening to God's word when the sermon is preached. People come to share with others who love God. What we do here on Sunday morning is very important.
Sometimes people come to worship and something keeps them from doing so. Do you have any idea what might keep someone from being able to worship? It's noise, and many times that noise is coming from boys and girls who are not behaving. You see, when you crawl under the pews, or make a lot of noise, or talk to your mom and dad, or keep going in and out, or wiggle around, you disturb those around you. Some people cannot pray when there is noise or commotion. Some people can't concentrate on the sermon and some just can't worship God if things are loud.
It really is not fair for any of us to keep someone else from being able to worship. What do you think we can do to make sure our church is a place where people really can worship God? (Help children with appropriate responses.) We can sit quietly and pay attention to what's going on. We can stay in our seat and not crawl under the pews or walk around the aisles. We can go to the restroom before the service starts so we will not have to leave. We can keep our hands to ourselves and not fight with our brothers and sisters.
It is important that everyone have a chance to hear about God and God's love and that everyone be able to worship. I know I can count on you to behave in the service so that our church is a special place to worship and praise the Lord.
Have a good week. Invite someone to come with you to Sunday School and church next week. God bless you.
