Purpose: To encourage children to do their part in building friendships or being at peace with someone else.
Material: Two jars and two small candles. Place one candle in a jar. Fasten the other candle to a piece of wood -- in the center -- so that it can float and stand upright, in the jar. (Experiment at home.) You will also need a way to add water to both jars. A baster will work. Matches to light the candles.
Lesson: I have a special situation here in these two jars that I want you to look at this morning. In each jar is a candle that is burning. Now, what do you think will happen if I add water to each jar? Let's see.
Well, that one went out because fire and water cannot exist together in the same place. But this one is still burning, for there is something else in this jar. The candle is on a piece of wood and the wood floats on the water and that keeps the water away from the fire. So both can exist together in the jar.
This reminds us of something we all need to remember as we live with other people. There are times when we have to add something special to prevent a problem. That something special that we can add is to be a peacemaker. That means, we will do what we can to keep a friend.
What do you do if someone hits you? ... Hitting back is one thing you can do; or you can be a peacemaker and not hit back. You can do a lot of things to keep a friend as a friend. You can do it because you have something special that we call love. And when we love one another then we will find a way to get along and not hurt each other. I hope you will keep this in mind as you live and play with others.
