Birth of the World's Savior - Include the themes of crucifixion, resurrection, Pentecost
Worship
Lectionary Worship Workbook
Planning Ideas And Resources For The Entire Church Year
Suggestion: Use the following themes to identify each section of the order of worship:
I. The Community Awaits Christ's Coming. "For whom are we waiting, anyway?"
II. The Community Celebrates Christ's Birth "God so loves the world that God gave the only forgotten son. Remember?"
III. The Community Responds to Christ's Presence. "Why do we call ourselves after Christ's Name and refuse to follow after his life?"
You may want to use the following quotes printed in the bulletin:
Beginning: "In despair we cry, 'Look at what the world has come to!' In joy, we shout, 'Look at what has come to the world!' " (author unknown)
Ending:
1. P. T. Forsyth has said that "Christ arouses antagonism in the human heart and heroism does not. Everybody welcomes a hero. The minority welcomes Christ. We do resent parting completely with ourselves. We do resent Christ." (Positive Preaching and the Modern Mind, P. T. Forsyth, Wm. B. Eerdman's Pub. Co., used by permission.)
2. When the shepherds arrive at the manger, W. H. Auden has them say, "O here and now our endless journey starts." (source unknown)
Invitation to the Corporate Celebration
One pastor began this way:
Whew! It's about over for another year; and we've resolved, "I'll never put myself through that again." (until next year, of course). Now that we're here, in the Name of God, the author of the season, take some time to relax for a few minutes, catch your breath, breathe deeply for a few minutes.
You may want to continue with this litany between pastor and ministers:
Pastor:
Now, are you ready? If so, good evening. Shalom. Peace. God be with you!
Ministers: We're surprised we're here. And we're not sure what it means to be here. Does God care that we're here?
Pastor:
I assure you God does care. God knows all about you.
Ministers: Yes, we have heard that God loves the world in general; we are not so sure that God loves us in particular.
Pastor:
The Scripture assures us that God knows us personally.
Ministers: How?
Pastor:
Because of the Good News that we have through the birth, life, death, resurrection, ascension of Jesus the Christ.
Ministers: Good deal. To that good news, we say alleluia, amen.
Consider the following for your celebration through Scriptures and Carols.
"A Service of Nine Carols and Lessons" copyright (c) 1969
by David N. Johnson
with prayers by Herbert F. Brokering
Augsburg Publishing House
Minneapolis, Minnesota
(for mixed choir, congregation, flute, and optional junior choir)
(Other Scriptures: Psalm 97, 98; Isaiah 62:6-7, 10-12; Titus 3:4-7)
Response to the Coming of the World's Savior
Suggestion:
One pastor began the proclamation this way: "Have you ever ordered a-la-carte in a restaurant? I have. And I don't like it; it's too expensive. Yet, many in the church order Christ a-la-carte; I don't like that either; it's too cheap.
Explore some of the a-la-carte views of Jesus:
1. greatest teacher who ever lived
2. miracle worker
3. best man in the world
Critique, briefly, the a-la-carte view of Jesus:
Then, offer a wholistic view of him, beginning with C. S. Lewis' argument that either Jesus was what he claimed, or else he was a lunatic. Be certain to hit the themes of crucifixion, resurrection, and the coming of the Holy Spirit.
Service of Candlelighting
Suggestion:
Caution: Check with state and local authorities about lighting individual candles.
1. Pastor - describe the mechanics of candlelighting.
2. As the candles are lit, the choir hums "What Child Is This?" while the pastor reads the gospel lesson for Christmas Eve.
3. Be in silence for a few moments after all the candles are lit.
4. Invite a few people to offer a sentence prayer.
5. Pastor conclude a prayer which includes a wholistic view of the savior.
Charge to the Congregation
Consider this statement:
We know that the peace of God is not the same as a Christmas cease-fire in the midst of war, nor the Red Baron for a brief moment being friendly with Snoopy, nor a family celebrating on Christmas morning. The Peace of Christ is the peace of knowing re-union with Christ in the midst of chaos. The presence of the Lord is peace - not cease-fire, not a repaired friendship for the moment, not a family gathered around the Christmas tree. These express the peace which the world gives, not the peace which passes understanding, which the world cannot give, and which the world cannot take away. Christmas is the ecstatic awareness that Christ reigns. Nothing, no one can separate us from him. So, rejoice! (author unknown)
