Object:
Our Lord Jesus Christ said, "Come to me all ye who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls."
Sometimes death is violent and brutal. Sometimes death comes all too soon. Sometimes death's separation is shockingly unexpected and heartbreaking. Sometimes though, despite the sorrow, death is a laying down of our burdens. Sometimes death is a well deserved and needed rest for the body that was bent and weakened and for the soul that suffered the many losses of growing old.
This death is one of those kind. It is one where there will certainly be sadness and sorrow over the loss of a sweet little lady who literally sparkled with life, but it is also one where the sorrow and the sadness will be mitigated a little, lessened a little, because we know that she has indeed laid down some heavy burdens. We know that this is a rest for her body and her soul.
So we cry our tears for her. We think about how we will miss her, and we celebrate the things she meant to us and the love she gave to us. We sorrow at our loss.
But, in addition, we rejoice for her; for no more pain; for no more loneliness; for reunion; for peace!
So, today our tears are not tears of agony, as they sometimes are at funerals, instead they are tears of sadness over a separation; tears of good-bye which are mixed with tears of gladness over the knowledge that the trip she makes today is a trip to paradise; a trip it was time for her to take; a long needed, permanent vacation in paradise; a trip that in the end, we are all glad she has made.
Come, let us worship the God who has given her rest for her soul.
