Call To Worship
Leader: Wait patiently for the Lord and he will hear your cry.
People: He will set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.
Leader: He will put a new song in your mouth, a song of praise to our God.
People: Happy are we who make the Lord our trust.
Collect
We come apart this morning, O Lord, that we might praise your name. We draw near to you and listen for your word for us. Speak to us, Lord, for we your servants are listening. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, how often you have tried to speak to us and we have not listened. Even worse, how many times we have heard your voice but refused to respond. Forgive us, Lord, and send your Holy Spirit upon us that we may not only listen when you call us, but also may respond with joy to your calling. Amen.
Hymns
"Here I Am, Lord"
"I Am Thine, O Lord"
Second Sunday After Epiphany
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20
Theme: Glorifying God In Body And Spirit
Call To Worship
Paul wrote to the church at Corinth asking, "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you?"
Remembering that God dwells within each of us through the Holy Spirit, let us present ourselves -- bodies, minds, and spirits -- before the Lord God Almighty whom we have come to worship.
Collect
O God, our Father, Creator and Sustainer of our lives, so often we come to you seeking renewal and strengthening of our spirits. This morning we come presenting our whole selves -- body, mind, and spirit -- asking that you will renew us, revitalize us, and awaken us to your presence within us, that we may better serve you in the days ahead. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We bow before you, Lord, in humble contrition, for we have treated our bodies as though they belonged solely to us. We have given in to our physical appetites, without considering the effect it would have on our well-being. We have failed to remember that we are stewards of our bodies, and that they are temples wherein dwells your Holy Spirit. Forgive our weakness, O Lord, and by the power of that same Holy Spirit enable us to be more faithful stewards of the body you have entrusted to each of us. Amen.
Hymns
"O Splendor Of God's Glory Bright"
"When Morning Gilds The Skies"
Second Sunday After Epiphany
Gospel Lesson: John 1:43-51
Theme: Jesus Calls His Disciples
Call To Worship
Like Nathaniel of old we come this morning with our doubts, our stereotypes, and our prejudices to hear what the Lord has to say to us.
Open your hearts and minds, and listen for what God has to say to you!
Collect
Heavenly Father, we call ourselves disciples of Jesus, but we come this morning with doubts and fears about our relationship to him and to you, O God. Speak to us in this time of worship, we pray, strengthening our faith and renewing our commitment. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, like Nathaniel, we ask, "How do you know me?" We have lived our lives as though we are completely independent. We have thought we had no one to answer to except ourselves. Now you have confronted us, and we realize that if we are to be faithful disciples we must strive to pattern our lives after Jesus. We seek your forgiveness, Lord, and the power of your Spirit to mend our ways. Amen.
Hymns
"Jesus Calls Us"
"I Surrender All"
