A Service Of Hymns And Readings For Trinity Sunday
Trinity Sunday is the Sunday following Pentecost. It is one of the special days of the church calendar which is often overlooked. Often it falls on Father's Day, Graduation Recognition Day, and many other end-of-the-school-year activities and beginning of summer activities. In the Catholic tradition, it is observed with more solemnity than the Protestant tradition, so much so that we often think of it as being exclusively a Catholic holy day. However, it is a part of the Protestant tradition as most Protestants believe in the Trinity, or three manifestations of God.
Theologically it is a difficult concept and we tend to shy away from difficult ideas which we cannot explain. But we need to stretch our minds and our faith and learn more about our tradition as well as our God.
This service of hymns and readings help us celebrate the Trinity.
This service is written for ten readers, but each local church can do what is best for your church. The Pastor and Liturgist can divide the parts of the two readers -- one for the messages and one for the scriptures, or you can divide the readings among as many readers as you can.
Use whatever version of the scripture you prefer.

History Of Trinity Sunday
In the early church, Trinity Sunday was observed as the eighth day of Pentecost. In the later Middle Ages, the day assumed its place as a celebration in honor of the Trinity. It concludes the commemoration of the life of Christ in the liturgy and the descent of the Spirit, thus bringing together the three persons of the Godhead.
Today, as we celebrate Trinity Sunday, we want to trace the revelation of God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit through word and song.

God Never Gives Up
Richard Johnson, in Life As It Ain't Yet, reminds us that even though we give up on ourselves, God never gives up. We make mistakes, fail, and do things of which we are not proud. God, however, never gives up on any of us. "Who are we to question God? God's faithfulness is forever."5

A Man And His Memories
In Before The Dawn: A Night Of Memories, Mary Lu Warstler tells of Peter's memory of fear and betrayal:
Peter sighed deeply, glanced at the ceiling and back to his friends. "In the garden, where Jesus went to pray, he needed my friendship and I slept. When the mob tried to take him captive, I drew my sword and swung it furiously, not even caring who felt its blade, forgetting how Jesus felt about violence. I was as surprised as the servant of the high priest, when his ear fell to the ground. I was even more surprised, and bewildered, when Jesus quietly bent and picked up the ear and replaced it on the man's head. The bleeding stopped immediately. The pain had not yet even registered." Peter placed a hand over an ear, feeling the pain the servant never felt.
"He hardly looked at me while he healed that man, but then he turned and spoke to me. His voice sounded sharp, but his eyes spoke love. 'Don't use the sword. We don't want violence.' And then he was gone. They took him away. While I watched helplessly, they bound him and led him down the path. I heard him say, 'Leave them alone. I'm the one you want.' I knew they wanted the rest of us, too. We all fled, fearing for our own lives! I had to know where they were taking him, so I followed far enough behind that none would know I belonged to his disciples."7

The Gospel Of Grace
Brennan Manning, in The Ragamuffin Gospel, speaks of the gospel of grace. He says, "The Good News means we can stop lying to ourselves ... grace saves us from the necessity of self-deception." He says further that, "something is radically wrong when the local church rejects a person who is accepted by Jesus...."8
Nothing can ever separate you from the love of God made visible in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Following Jesus
The Call Of God
The call of God breaks into the night,
And sleep departs the soul
Come, follow me, I have a task,
For all to reach the goal.
Here am I the child responds
Show me the way to go
And I will follow you, my God
I want your will to know.
Hear my call, my words obey,
Lift up your life to me.
And I will lead you safely home
Follow through all eternity.9

Christ Our Rock
Madeleine L'Engle, in And It Was Good, says Christ is our rock in all times of our life. We cannot have openness unless our faith in God as Lord of all is bedrock under our feet. We need this rock. In Paul's first letter to the Corinthian Christians, he emphasizes the firmness of the rock.
Ms. L'Engle tell us, "The Trinity has always been a unity; the Father who will be what he will be, the Holy Spirit, before creation brooding over the universe, and the Word shouting for joy."10
Scripture
Psalm 40:1-2; 1 Corinthians 10:1-4

The Communicator
Again, Carlo Carretto says, "We could say that without this third Person there would be no progress ... The Holy Spirit is communication between the Father and the Son, and communication between us and God."11
Scripture
John 14:25-26; 16:12-13
Hymn
"Come, Holy Spirit"

The Trinity
Carlo Carretto again reminds us, "Indeed, the Trinity is the intimate life of God. He is not alone. He is a Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Father is the source of all things; the Son is the image of the Father, the Holy Spirit is the love which unites them."12
Scripture
John 14:22-23
Hymn
"Holy, Holy, Holy"
Benediction (Pastor)
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all, both now and forevermore. Amen.
