Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VII, Cycle C
Object:
First Lesson: Jeremiah 23:1-6
Theme: Raise Up A Shepherd
Call To Worship (based on Psalm 46:1-5, 10)
One: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
All: Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
One: though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. Selah
All: There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.
One: God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns. [And God said:]
All: "Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth."
Collect (Jeremiah 23:5-6)
One: The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
All: In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: "The Lord is our righteousness."
Prayer Of Confession (based on Jeremiah 23:4-6)
Heavenly Father, we call upon you to gather the remnant of your flock and bring us together into one fold. You call upon us to become your shepherds caring for your flock. With you beside us and behind us, we will fear no longer, nor shall we be dismayed. You are our righteousness, you are our peace. You bring us together as one people. As we share in your vision of what your kingdom will be, strengthen us as we strive to mirror your vision in our life together as your disciples. Where there is need, call us to share with each other. Where there is want, open our hearts that we may see and hear the opportunity for ministry. Where there is pain and suffering, hallow our own brokenness so that your strength becomes apparent in our walk together toward healing. This is your kingdom, your fellowship, your church, and your vision. We are your people. Amen.
