Christmas 1
Poems
A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
Rejoice! To us a child is born.
Behold, a son is given.
We hail a new beginning
as we celebrate our hope.
And yet, how little human eyes can see,
for here, amid our great festivity,
if we but lift our eyes,
across the years,
a cross appears,
a scourge,
a crown of thorns
and death.
Be thankful Mary could not see
beyond what was, what was to be.
She’d see him grow
yet could not know
that he would pay with life
for human sin
and die
that we might live.
O, Almighty One, I pray
that in our hearts today,
we’re not enticed
to see the Christ
as babe alone.
Let it be known
that this is He
who sets us free
eternally.
Behold, a son is given.
We hail a new beginning
as we celebrate our hope.
And yet, how little human eyes can see,
for here, amid our great festivity,
if we but lift our eyes,
across the years,

a crown of thorns
and death.
Be thankful Mary could not see
beyond what was, what was to be.
She’d see him grow

O, Almighty One, I pray
that in our hearts today,
we’re not enticed
to see the Christ

Let it be known
