Combination Locks And Freedom

Matthew To Revelation
Object: a combination lock
Good morning, boys and girls. Does anyone have a combination lock? (let them answer) If you have a combination lock, that is, a lock that has a lot of numbers on it, tell me what you use it for. (let them answer) A lot of boys and girls have a combination lock to use on their bicycles. They ride their bikes to school or to the park, and while they are in school or playing, they know that their bikes are safely locked. Once you lock your bike up with a lock like this, then it cannot be moved or taken.
Of course, you must remember the combination so that you can open the lock after you have used it. That means that you must have the right numbers and know how to turn the lock in the right directions so that it will open. Knowing the combination is very important, and it is the only thing that can make something locked be free again.
I think that a combination is like the truth. Combinations open locks or free things that are locked up. The truth makes things free also, according to Jesus. When we know the truth about anything, we work with it and get the right answers to whatever problem we have. For instance, when we know the truth about Jesus and that he is the Savior of the world, then we know a truth that is very important.
It means that we can stop worrying about a lot of things. We can stop worrying about dying. How many of you ever have worried about dying? (let them answer) That is a big worry to a lot of people who do not know that Jesus promises us a much longer life in his new world than in this world. Once you know the truth, then you are free from worry. The truth is that Jesus forgives sins. If you are worried about your sins, like the time that you told a lie to your mother or brother, and you ask Jesus to forgive you for the sin, and he does, then you can quit worrying about the sin.
The truth makes you free. You do not have to worry or fuss about something when you know the truth. Jesus says that he is the truth. There is nothing about Jesus that is a lie. Whatever he does or says is the truth.
That is why I like to think about the truth as being the combination. It is the right combination, and it makes us just as free as if we have a bicycle lock with a combination and we spin it to the right numbers. If we do it right, then the bicycle lock will come free just as you and I do when we follow Jesus. Jesus is the truth, and Jesus makes us free.
