A Service Of Hymns And Readings For Thanksgiving
There are several opportunities for readers in this service of Thanksgiving.
The reading of the creation story at the beginning of the service may be done by one person or divided among seven readers.
The dialogue needs two readers.
The monologue and story each have one reader.
Psalm 23 is done by the congregation, or can be done by the choir or a select group of men and women.
Scriptures can be done by the pastor or laypersons.
The scriptures that are printed in this service are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible.
The altar can contain a cornucopia with food and produce spilling from it. A special cloth of Thanksgiving print with hills made by stacks of books under it can be used in place of the regular altar cloth.
In the service, I have the congregation bringing the offering to the altar. However, it can be taken the traditional way in the pews or with an offering plate where worshipers can deposit their offering as they leave.

What Do I Have To Be Thankful For?
Pastor: Come, let us offer our gifts of thanksgiving to the Lord.
Voice One: Thanksgiving! Bah! Humbug! More commercialism! I can't celebrate Thanksgiving. My employer just raised my share of my medical care. I have to pay more for my medicine and ...
Voice Two: I don't have a medical plan. I have to pay for all my medical bills and medicine. I thank God there is medicine to help keep me healthy so I can work.
Voice One: I can't give thanks. Joe got the raise I wanted and deserved.
Voice Two: I lost my job last year. I thank God for friends and family who help me in so many ways.
Voice One: I can't give thanks. My fourteen-room house is in need of more repairs than I can give it.
Voice Two: I have no home. Thank God for homeless shelters.
Voice One: I can't give thanks. The garden didn't do so well. We only have half as much fruit and vegetables put away this year.
Voice Two: I have no food, nor any way to get any. I thank God for soup kitchens and food pantries.
Voice One: I can't give thanks. Some idiot spilled coffee on my best suit.
Voice Two: I have no suit, but I thank God for the Salvation Army, Goodwill, and churches who provide clothing for the destitute.
Voice One: I can't give thanks. My son is in prison and I'm too ashamed to see people.
Voice Two: Thank God for prison chaplains and visitors who bring us the gospel.
Voice One: I can't give thanks when there are wars and rumors of wars.
Voice Two: I thank God for the courage of young men and women who give their lives for our freedom.
Voice One: I can't give thanks. I am a sinner.
Voice Two: Thank God for Jesus Christ who gives us gratitude and salvation.
Both: Yes, let us thank God for his mercy endures forever.
Pastor: We have much for which to be thankful. We have an abundance of mercy. Above all, we have the love of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Come to the altar and bring your gift of thanksgiving as we sing together.

The First Thanksgiving
My name is Pilgrim. We left Plymouth, England, with hopes and dreams for, if not a bright new future, at least a place of tolerance and peace. Fourteen weeks later, we arrived in North America and settled in what we called Plymouth -- after our English port of departure.
Many of us were businessmen looking for adventure and wealth. We knew nothing about hard, physical labor, farming, fishing, or hunting. Our supplies were low and the temperature even lower. I'd never experienced such cold! The bay was teeming with fish, but most of us had no idea how to catch them -- or what to do with them if we did.
We left the Mayflower daily -- those of us who were still alive and well -- to build small cabins and a larger storehouse. Scurvy and pneumonia took its toll. Some simply froze to death. By the end of that first horrible winter, only about half of our original group remained.
We worked hard, listened to the Indians, who became our friends, and by harvest time had reason to celebrate. The Indians had furnished seed and our corn was abundant. Barley also did well that year. Our homes were built and land was cleared. We would be ready ere the winter storms began that year.
Governor Bradford sent men to hunt. They returned with enough waterfowl and wild turkeys to last us a week. Men learned to fish and brought cod and bass. We invited our Indian friends for a feast. Ninety of them showed up. Luckily, they brought five deer with them. God was good and merciful. We gave him thanks and feasted for three days.

"Bless This House"
Story
A House Fit For A King
Once upon a time, a very devout Jew named Josiah prayed, "Please, Lord, I am an old man. Before I die, let me build a fine house for the Messiah to live in when he arrives."
"Josiah," replied the Lord, "you have been my faithful servant, working diligently with your hands, carving beautiful designs, dealing honestly with your customers. I will grant your heart's desire, but you must follow my plans."
Josiah was overjoyed. "Yes, my Lord, I will do as you say." Already in his mind he could see the beautiful house trimmed with gold and silver, sparkling with gems of all kinds, shapes, and colors.
"Here is what I want,"said the Lord, and he placed before Josiah a parchment with a design in bold, black letters. Josiah stared as the Lord explained.
"I want you to find a cave near Bethlehem that will keep out the winter chill. I want it lined with hay to smell like the fresh cut crop. I want a window facing the east large enough for a special light and small enough to keep out the cold wind. I want a stall for a faithful donkey and lots of room for visitors. I want a manger strong enough to hold a child. Can you do this, Josiah?"
"Well, yes," replied Josiah, trying to keep the disappointment from his voice. "But, Lord, what you describe is a stable, a barn for animals, not a house fit for a king!"
"I know, Josiah, but your loving touch will make it a house -- at least for the night of his birth."
Hearing a touch of sadness in the Lord's voice, Josiah replied, "Then I will do it, Lord. It will be the most beautiful stable in all of Bethlehem. It will be a home fit for a king -- if only for a short time!"
