Call To Worship
Come to the Lenten journey with all your heart. Come not from obligation of duty alone. Come not only with the regret of failings but with hope that glimmers with your own possibility. Come this Ash Wednesday with your whole being to begin the journey.
Collect
We return to you, our God, without fear because you are gracious and merciful. We dare enter this time of looking inward because your spirit abounds with steadfast love. We present our griefs and laments trusting that you are slow to anger. We want to come closer to you, O God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
How can we bring our whole being, dear God, when some have lost heart? How can we come with the posture of the halfhearted? How can we soften a hardhearted stance? Turn toward us, O God, as we turn toward you with all our heart. Amen.
19C Hymns
"O For A Closer [Bond][Walk] With [God][Thee]" Tune: BEATITUDO
"Not My Brother, Nor My Sister," "Standing In The Need Of Prayer," or "It's Me, It's Me, O Lord" Tune: NEED OF PRAYER or PENITENT
"Depth Of Mercy" Tune: CANTERBURY
Ash Wednesday
Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 5:20b--6:10
Theme: God Is Listening
Call To Worship
Leader: God is listening to the anguish of the world.
People: God hears the screaming and silent cries of the mistreated.
Leader: God is listening to the hatred of the world.
People: God hears the explosions of gun and angry word.
All: God is listening; God hears.
Collect
Leader: You call us into tomorrow, O God.
People: You urge us toward hope.
Leader: You need us now to work with you to renew your power in the world through patience,
kindness, and truthful speech.
People: You bring us to hope. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Call to us until we listen and begin to hear, O God. Call to us until we become too restless to stay undisturbed. Call to us until we begin to act and make a difference. For your sake. Amen.
19C Hymns
"Spirit, Spirit Of Gentleness" Tune: SPIRIT
"Lead Us From Death To Life" Tune: WORLD PEACE PRAYER
"We Are Not Our Own" Tune: YARNTON
Ash Wednesday
Gospel: Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21
Theme: Hearing Your Whisper
Call To Worship
We do not have to shout for God to hear us. We need not couch our words in expected or traditional holy language for God. God notices our slightest turning from thoughtless ways. God hears our whisper.
Collect
Teach us, Compassionate One, how private our conversations are with you. Our prayers are not for show but for talking with you. Strengthen our courage so we can be more honest when we talk to you -- even if our words come out in a whisper. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
In our frustration, O God, we end up shouting before we realize we have raised our voices. In our frustration, we end up so quiet that nothing appears to come from our lips. Hear the struggle within our shouting, dear God, as well as the urgent whispering of our souls. Amen.
19C Hymns
"Softly And Tenderly" Tune: SOFTLY AND TENDERLY or THOMPSON
"[Dear God, Embracing Humankind][Dear Lord And Father Of Mankind]" Tune: REST
"Prayer Is The Soul's Sincere Desire" Tune: CAMPMEETING
