Counting On God

Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle B
Call To Worship
God appears to be supportive of us when things go right. In the midst of the easy times in life, we can count on God. God seems to let us down when things go wrong. In the midst of the messes of life, we also can count on God. Come, let us worship the Sustainer, the constant, steady presence in our lives.
Collect
Only by having the chance to practice turning away from wrong do we discover how strong we are because of you, O God. Only by having the chance to wrestle with evil's magnet do we discover how strong you are, O God. Hearten us throughout the journey so we might continue to choose you. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Sometimes, God, we wonder if being the best person we can be is worth it all. Then we realize that our focus has gone askew. You are the object of our trust and faithfulness. Because you made us and because we are connected to you, we can engage in hopeful living, surmount what we need to, and come out on the side of faith. Amen.
57B Hymns1

Second Lesson: Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12
Theme: God's Mirror
Call To Worship
We are unable to observe ourselves directly, but only through the reflection of a mirror. Could it be that we see God reflectively through the fairness of others, our awareness of the creative process, in new ideas, acts of compassion, our own resolve to live decent lives? We do see God faithfully reflected through humanity.
Collect
God, you continually open up spiritual space within the room of the soul that wants to know you. You want to be known. You speak to us in many and various ways. Thank you for mirroring a true picture of yourself through Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Dear God, help us to recognize you in the people around us. Help us to live in a way that others might draw closer to you. In the name of Christ. Amen.
57B Hymns1

"I Know My Faith Is Founded" Tune: NUN LOB, MEIN SEEL
" 'Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus" Tune: TRUST IN JESUS
Proper 22
Sunday between October 2 and October 8 inclusive
Gospel: Mark 10:2-16
Theme: Finding Love
Call To Worship
Leader: When we find love, let us cherish it.
People: Some among us wonder if ever we will find a life mate.
Leader: Before we catch a glimpse of love, let us practice being lovable.
People: Some among us seem unable to sustain a loving relationship.
Leader: When we find love, let us grow and stretch it to reach beyond ourselves.
People: Some among us have lost a life mate to death.
Leader: When we have known love, let us remember its joy not measured by clock time.
All: When we find love, let us cherish it.
Collect
Your love, O God, is greater than our love, yet our choice to love is honorable. Because you first loved us, we also have the capacity to love others. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Dear God, loving is not always easy. Keep especially near to you those who associate love with its absence, with friction, or with disappointment. Keep especially near to you those who grieve a lost love. Keep especially near to you those who day by day are daring to season their love with ever-strengthening commitment. Amen.
