(DAVID TRIPS OVER ELIAB COWERING ON THE GROUND)
ELIAB: (PULLING DAVID DOWN NEXT TO HIM ON THE GROUND) GET DOWN! Do you want to get us all killed?
DAVID: (STANDING) Oh, hi, Eliab. What are you doing down there?
ELIAB: (PULLING DAVID DOWN) GET DOWN! You're a sitting duck. They've been throwing in the big stuff, 88s, 105s, GIANTS!
DAVID: (STANDING) Giants? The Philistines have giants?
ELIAB: (STANDING) Do they ever. And boy, is he a big one.
DAVID: Only one?
ELIAB: One's all they need.
DAVID: How big is he?
ELIAB: I heard he was six cubits and a span.
DAVID: Wow! Nine feet, nine inches.
ELIAB: That's what it is, huh? I was never very good at math. He wears a bronze helmet and armor that weighs five thousand shekels! Can you believe that? Five thousand shekels -- how much is 5000 shekels?
DAVID: Two hundred pounds. What has he done, kill a lot of our men?
ELIAB: No, not one, but he sure has scared a lot of our men.
DAVID: Really?
ELIAB: Yes, really, but you're not staying to see him. Get back home to your sheep.
DAVID: Who does he think he is?
ELIAB: Go on home, David, before I get angry. (WE HEAR THE GIANT'S FOOTSTEPS) Uh oh, here comes Goliath the Giant now. (ELIAB DROPS TO THE GROUND AND COWERS SOME MORE. DAVID STANDS TALL)
GOLIATH: (ON THE MICROPHONE. ELIAB AND DAVID SEE GOLIATH, NO ONE ELSE NEEDS TO) No one comes to fight me even today? Am I not a Philistine and you, servants of King Saul? Choose a man for yourselves and let him come down to me. If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will become your servants, but if I kill him, then you shall become our servants. Today I confront the army of Israel. Is there not a man that will fight me? (LAUGHS) I thought not. (WE HEAR GIANT'S FOOTSTEPS AS HE EXITS)
DAVID: Eliab! Eliab! (DAVID FINDS ELIAB COWERING BEHIND HIM) Oh, there you are. (DRAGGING ELIAB TO HIS FEET) Eliab, why doesn't someone kill him?
ELIAB: Kill him -- Goliath -- are you kidding?
MESSENGER: (ENTERS ON ROLLER SKATES) David! David! Telegram for David!
DAVID: Over here. I'm David.
MESSENGER: (OFFERING TELEGRAM TO DAVID) Are you David?
DAVID: Yes.
MESSENGER: The shepherd boy? (TAKES TELEGRAM BACK)
DAVID: Yes. That's me.
MESSENGER: Shall I sing it for you? (SINGING HORRIBLY) King Saul. King Saul ...
DAVID: (TAKING TELEGRAM) Never mind. I'll just read it. (MESSENGER IS WAITING FOR A TIP) Do you want a tip?
Don't sing anymore.
(MESSENGER EXITS) Hm. King Saul wants to see me. All right, I'll go see the King. (DAVID CROSSES TO ANOTHER AREA)
CHORUS: (WEARING CROWNS)
Verse 3
Young David went to the King. Hallelu, hallelu.

DAVID: You sent for me?
SAUL: I did? Yes, I suppose I did. Well, sit down. Relax. (DAVID SITS) What did you want?
DAVID: King Saul ...
SAUL: (STARTLED) King Saul? Where?
DAVID: Relax. That's you -- King Saul.
SAUL: Oh, yes, that's right. I was just testing. Just testing. What happened?
DAVID: You sent for me.
SAUL: Oh, yes. That's right. Well, what did you want?
DAVID: I didn't want anything.
SAUL: Well, then, why bother me? Get out! Get out!
DAVID: (DAVID BEGINS TO EXIT BUT HESITATES AND RETURNS) King Saul, I have an idea.
SAUL: (FULLY RECOVERED) David, my boy. How are you? (HUGS DAVID) Sit down. Sit down, my boy. It's been such a long time. How are you?
DAVID: (SITTING) Not bad. How are you?
SAUL: Not good. Boy, have I got a problem.
DAVID: That's what I came to see you about. I'm going to kill the giant, Goliath, for you.
SAUL: Giant, schmiant. That's not my problem. Giants are no problem. It's my daughter. No one wants to marry her.
DAVID: I'll marry her.
SAUL: No, no, David. You're like a son to me. I couldn't stick you with her. She's so ...
DAVID: Listen, I'll make you a deal. I'll kill the giant and you give me your daughter. Deal?
SAUL: Deal. (THEY PERFORM AN ELABORATE HANDSHAKE. DAVID EXITS AND THEN REENTERS)
DAVID: Oh, I forgot my lunch.
SAUL: Who are you? What do you want?

SAUL: Who are you?

SAUL: Did I call for you?
DAVID: Well, not this time. I forgot ...
SAUL: Get out! (THROWS LUNCH BOX AT DAVID)
DAVID: Oh, thanks.
SAUL: Wait, do you know David?
DAVID: Quite well, yes.

Young David went to the war. Hallelu,
David tried the armor of Saul.
He found it didn't work at all.
Chorus
Little David, play on your harp. Hallelu, hallelu,
Little David, play on your harp. Hallelu.
ELIAB: I heard you were going to fight Goliath. Are you mad?
DAVID: No, but I am a bit angry. Saul gave me his armor to wear and I wasn't used to it, so I'm going to use my stick and my sling. I'll just take along these five smooth stones.
ELIAB: That's it? Five smooth stones?
DAVID: Let me tell you something. Whenever I was tending my sheep and a lion or a bear would attack my flock and carry off one of my sheep, I would catch him and kill him with my bare hands. I have killed both the lion and the bear. This giant is no better than they are since he taunted the armies of the living God. The Lord delivered me from the paws of the lion and the paws of the bear. He will deliver me from the paws, er, I mean the hands of the Philistine.
CHORUS: (PRAYERFULLY)
Verse 5
Young David faced the giant. Hallelu, hallelu.
Young David faced the giant. Hallelu.
David fought the giant alone.
He wasn't scared 'cause the Lord he'd known.
Chorus
Little David, play on your harp. Hallelu, hallelu.
Little David, play on your harp. Hallelu.
GOLIATH: (WE HEAR HIS FOOTSTEPS) You must be David.
DAVID: Yes, how did you know?
GOLIATH: (INDICATING CHORUS) Those girls over there have been singing about you. (THE CHORUS GIGGLES AND WAVES TO DAVID) David, am I a dog that you come to me with a stick?
DAVID: Are you asking for my opinion?
GOLIATH: I curse you by all the gods of the Philistines.
DAVID: That's a lot of cursing. Should you be cursing? This is a mixed audience, you know. (THE CHORUS GIGGLES AND WAVES)
GOLIATH: Oh, excuse me, ladies. But you, David, you come here and I'll give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field.
DAVID: You come against me with a sword and a spear but I come against you in the name of the Lord, Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will hand you over to me and I'll strike you down and cut off your head. I will give the carcasses of your army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth. And then the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by the sword or spear that the Lord saves, for the battle is the Lord's and He will give all of you into our hands. (SOUND EFFECTS: GOLIATH MOVES CLOSER TO DAVID. DAVID REACHES INTO HIS POUCH AND DRAWS OUT A STONE AND FITS IT INTO HIS SLING AND WHIRLS IT AROUND HIS HEAD AND LETS IT GO AND GOLIATH FALLS WITH A MIGHTY EARTH-SHAKING CRASH)

David is a hero, now.
The Lord our God, He showed him how.
