The Day of Pentecost
Devotional
Water From the Rock
Lectionary Devotional for Cycle C
Object:
This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.
-- John 14:17
There is a mystery to the church that cannot be proven by the world's standards of proof. This is a truth that can only be experienced. Jesus promises that God will send an advocate to the church that is a Spirit of truth. Then, he warns that the world will not recognize this truth because it is not prepared to receive such truth. The church has one foot in both worlds. At times, it can feel the Spirit of God within it. At other times, it is filled with the skepticism of the world and cannot recognize the presence of God's Spirit among its members. When we find ourselves having such doubts, we are invited to strengthen our faith by intentionally doing some of the works of Christ. Jesus told his disciples, "I am in the Father and the Father is in me."
Here we see the connection that holds the universe together. God is in Jesus, and the Spirit of that same God is in us. Acting in a consciously Christian manner draws us closer to Christ and strengthens our connection with God. When our spirits connect, we are drawn away from fear and made aware of our adoption as children of God. When we do the works of Christ, we will produce the fruits of Christ, and these fruits will become their own verification. As we do the works, we will experience the Spirit, and the truth shall be made known to us. By the church doing the works of Christ, even when we are not confident of our own faith, we experience a different kind of peace than that which the world offers. We know the peace of realizing that we are not alone but are connected to the God who in Christ is healing the world.
