Call To Worship
Leader: The first Passover was to be celebrated as a Day of Remembrance that God spared his people by the blood of the sacrificial lamb.
People: We remember. Praise be to God!
Leader: The Last Supper was to be celebrated as a Day of Remembrance that God spared not his Son in order that his children might know his love and learn to serve him.
People: We remember. Praise be to God!
Leader: You who call upon the name of Christ, we are gathered to recall the story of the night Jesus Christ was betrayed. Are you prepared to come to the table of Jesus Christ whose life was poured out for you?
People: By the grace of God, we are!
Collect
Almighty God, you led your people out of bondage in Egypt so long ago. Now we come to you seeking freedom from sin that we might more worthily serve you by serving others. Bless this time of Remembrance, we pray, and as we come to your Table may it be for us a means of grace. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
You have given us new life, O Lord. For such a great gift we should be ever thankful. Yet, we quickly take it for granted. We see our lives in terms of special privileges, and forget our responsibilities. Forgive us, Lord, for neglecting to use our gifts for your glory, for thinking only of ourselves. Help us to turn our privileges into action, not thinking about the risks involved but only desiring to serve you and work for your glory. Amen.
Hymns
"The Bread Of Life For All is Broken"
"O Crucified Redeemer"
Holy/Maundy Thursday
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Theme: The Institution Of The Lord's Supper
Call To Worship
Christ calls us to join him at this Table of Remembrance.
The Lord asks us to watch with him in his passion.
Jesus showed us by example that we are to serve each other.
Come, let us accept the Master's invitation, and let us Remember!
Collect
In coming to your Table, O Lord, we sense our union with the community of believers spanning all time and all places. We remember, with humility, your passion and crucifixion. As we partake of the Bread and the Cup speak to us again of your great sacrifice for us, and renew in us the spirit of servanthood that we might show forth your love to others. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Most Merciful God, we confess that we live such busy lives that there seems to be little time for Remembrance of your great love shown to us through your Son, Jesus Christ. Forgive our preoccupation with trivial things, and by your Spirit make us faithful in every time of trial; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Hymns
"For The Bread Which You Have Broken"
"Jesus, Keep Me Near The Cross"
Holy/Maundy Thursday
Gospel Lesson: John 13:1-17, 31b-35
Theme: A New Commandment
Call To Worship
Christ our Lord invites to his Table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another.
Christ has prepared a feast of love. Come, let us join him.
Collect
O God, who by the example of your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, has taught us the greatness of true humility, and does call us to watch with him in his passion: give us grace to serve one another in all lowliness, and to enter into the fellowship of his suffering. Once again remind us of your commandment to love one another as you love us, so that everyone will know that we are indeed your disciples. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Most Merciful God, we confess that we have failed to love one another as Christ loves us. We have pledged loyalty to him with our lips, and then betrayed, deserted, or denied him. Forgive us, we pray, and by your Spirit keep us faithful to you in all that we do. Amen.
Hymns
"Jesu, Jesu"
"Because Thou Hast Said"
