The Deceiver Deceive
Worship
LECTIONARY WORSHIP AIDS
Series VII, Cycle A
Call To Worship (based on Psalm 105:8-11)
One: God is mindful of his covenant forever, of the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations ...
All: ... the covenant that he made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
One: Even as we gather as a sinful people we celebrate God's faithfulness which never fails.
All: Lord, descend to us as our portion and inheritance, as we worship you today.
Collect
Today we come together as God's people, sure of God's wisdom in charting our paths. After a time of long waiting we see God's faithful promises fulfilled in our midst once again. Bind us together, Lord, as your servant people, secure in your love and blessed in your mercy. As your will for our lives together unfolds, day by day, open our hearts and minds to the glory of your will for your people. Bless us as we seek to witness to your glory in the world around us and beyond us. These things we pray in your mighty name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord we confess to you today that when we attempt to deceive others through our choices, we do not deceive you. Indeed, sometimes we deceive no one but ourselves. This day we pray for your forgiveness as we pledge that in all our dealings with you, with our sisters and brothers in the faith, and in the larger world, we will seek to honor you by our actions and our words. Forgive us our transgressions, Lord of Mercy. Amen.
Hymns
"Sanctuary"
"Seek Ye First The Kingdom Of God"
"Bind Us Together, Lord"
Proper 12/Ordinary Time 17
Sunday between July 24 and July 30 inclusive
Second Lesson: Romans 8:26-39
Theme: Prayer Beyond Words
Call To Worship
Come before God, all you who are God's people, to worship our Lord. Come prepared to speak. Come prepared to sing. Come prepared to - (silence for ten seconds) - listen. Amen.
Collect (based on Romans 8)
Lord, we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to your purpose. Help us in our weakness through your Spirit. We do not know how to pray as we ought. We count upon you to stand in our place, so that our Spirit might intercede for us. We raise up our sighs, our hopes, and our fears too deep for words, and beg you today to demonstrate your perfection in our brokenness, your power in our weakness, and your glory in our profession of weakness. These things we pray in your name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession (based on Romans 8:31-39)
Lord, what then are we to say about our trials? If you are for us, who can stand against us? You did not withhold your own Son, but gave him up for all of us, and it is your Son who is seated at your right hand and intercedes for us. We believe that nothing, not hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword, will separate us from the love of Christ. No, in all things we are more than conquerors through you who loved us. As your people we confess that we are convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
Hymns
"A Wonderful Savior Is Jesus My Lord"
"Alas, And Did My Savior Bleed"
"He Leadeth Me"
Proper 12/Ordinary Time 17
Sunday between July 24 and July 30 inclusive
Gospel Lesson: Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52
Theme: The Kingdom Is Like All These
Call To Worship
The kingdom of heaven is like this congregation. God gave everything to purchase us.
Collect
Lord God you are our treasure, you are our pearl of great price, your blessings fill our nets as we cast them into the sea. Whereas we might struggle to understand other parts of your word, your lessons today in the parables of your Son make it clear that nothing matches the worth of your kingdom, and the salvation that you have offered to us this day. Yes, Lord, we seek you, we love you, we serve you, and we worship you. These things we pray in your mighty name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
How marvelous, O Lord, our God, are the many ways in which you are revealed. You are revealed in the parables found in your Word, as well as in the examples we find in your world. Help us, Author of all things, to read your parables in the lives of those around us, as we seek to be your healing presence in our local and global communities. Amen.
Hymns
"Seek Ye First"
"O Worship The Lord In The Beauty Of Holiness"
"God Be With You"
