A Devotional Guide to the Psalms
Object:
Deliver me, O LORD, from evildoers;
protect me from those who are violent ...
O LORD, my Lord, my strong deliverer,
you have covered my head in the day of battle ...
I know that the LORD maintains the cause of the needy
and executes justice for the poor.
-- Psalm 140:1, 7, 12
Theme: Prayer for protection
Outline
1-8 -- Prayer for deliverance from evildoers.
9-11 -- Prayer for their evils to overtake them.
12-13 -- God will maintain his cause for the poor and the righteous.
Notes
• Lament
• Psalms 140-143 are a group with similar characteristics:
a. All bear the name of David.
b. All are similar in thought and language.
c. All reflect the same circumstances -- one subject to the attacks and plotting of wicked men.
d. Davidic authorship is questioned by scholars.
For Reflection
• In verses 1-5, how does the psalmist describe the character, the methods, and the purpose of the evildoers?
• What does the psalmist pray for?
• What sustains his faith? (vv. 6-8, 12-13).
• The New Testament believers' experience of conflict with evil is dealt with in many passages. (See Ephesians 6:10-13; Romans 12:9-21.)
Prayer
Lord God, protect us from the temptations of the devil, and from the injustices and cruelties of the wicked. Maintain your cause and uphold justice and truth in our lives, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
