Object:
A bag of candy or stickers. (Something that can be used as a small gift.Make sure you have enough for everyone.)
Hmm, let me look you over this morning. Here, you don't have blonde hair, you can have a present. (Give children who do not have blonde hair candy or stickers.) I don't like blonde hair. I heard that all people with blonde hair are mean. People with blonde hair can't have a present. Oh, here, you don't have blonde hair, you get a present. (Go to the children one by one making observations about them.)
Well, that's enough blonde hair. How about white socks? Who has on white socks? Too bad. You have on white socks. You don't get a gift. (Pass over all the children wearing white socks, giving gifts to all the other children.) I heard that everyone who wears white socks is bad. Sorry. You have on white socks. You can't have a gift.
Some of you don't look too happy about all of this. What's the matter? How did it feel to be skipped over or left out just because you have blonde hair or because you wore white socks this morning? (Allow children to share their feelings.)
So you don't think it's fair that some people got a special gift and others didn't just because they looked different? You know what? You are exactly right. It is not fair for people to be left out or treated unfairly just because of how they look. But you know what else? Many people treat others that way all the time.
People get judged unfairly because their skin is a different color or because they weigh more than other people. Some people get judged unfairly because they don't have a lot of money and they dress differently than others, or because they are girls instead of boys. Do you see how wrong it is to judge people based on how they look on the outside? Can you understand how much it can hurt someone to be treated so unfairly?
If we believe in God and we love God, then we also believe that God created each and every one of us. If God made all of us, then no one has the right to treat anyone else unfairly because of looks.
You have been good sports this morning. If you did not get a present earlier, you may have one now because you are all special to God and to me, no matter what you look like.
This week, be very careful not to treat anyone unfairly just because they look different. God bless you.
