(HUSBAND AND WIFE ARE TALKING AS THEY ENTER)
WIFE: Yes. Yes!
HUSBAND: No. No!
WIFE: Oh, yes, you will.
HUSBAND: Oh, no, I won't.
WIFE: You will, because I don't love you.
HUSBAND: I still won't give you a divorce.
WIFE: Yes, you will. I have friends that will testify for me in court.
HUSBAND: You won't ever get to court, because I'm not going to file for divorce and you won't.
WIFE: And why won't I file for divorce?
HUSBAND: You just won't.
WIFE: I'll make you so miserable you'll be glad to divorce me.
HUSBAND: Impossible. You can't make things so miserable that I would ever divorce you.
WIFE: We'll see.
HUSBAND: Never.
WIFE: But I love Bob.
HUSBAND: You could love me again.
WIFE: Never. Not ever again. I doubt if I ever loved you at all.
HUSBAND: You're confused.
WIFE: I guess I know my own mind.
HUSBAND: You're confused. If you'd just be willing to get some counseling ...
WIFE: We tried that, remember?
HUSBAND: You weren't willing to try.
WIFE: I tried.
HUSBAND: You walked out.
WIFE: It was useless.
HUSBAND: I was willing to change, why weren't you?
WIFE: Change? Listen, I've changed. I've matured. You're the one who needs to mature.
HUSBAND: Me?
WIFE: You're about to tell me how mature you are, right?
HUSBAND: Well, no, not really, I'm not, but I'm willing to work on it. If you'd just be ...
WIFE: Good. Great. Work on it. But work on it alone.
HUSBAND: Alone? Why? Why can't we work on it together?
WIFE: I need my freedom.
HUSBAND: But you won't be free. You'll be the slave of this other man.
WIFE: Bob. I won't be his slave. He makes me happy. I haven't been happy for fourteen years.
HUSBAND: You can't say that.
WIFE: It's true. All I've ever had with you is responsibility. Loads of responsibilities. And I'm sick and tired of it. I tell you I want my freedom. I'm leaving. I don't care if you divorce me or not. I'm leaving. You'll find someone else.
HUSBAND: I found you a long time ago and I'll be ...
WIFE: Waiting? Is that what you were going to say? You'll be waiting? You'll wait until my little fling is over and you'll be there waiting for the wayward wife, right?
HUSBAND: That's about right.
WIFE: Then you're going to get awfully old waiting. I'm leaving and I'm not coming back -- ever.
HUSBAND: Oh, you'll be back.
WIFE: Well, then, grow old waiting. I don't care.
HUSBAND: Well, I do. I do care. And I'll be here waiting for you.
WIFE: That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. You'll find someone else. You'll see.
HUSBAND: I won't.
WIFE: How can you be so sure?
HUSBAND: I'm sure.
WIFE: You'll be lonely and the right person will come along and ...
HUSBAND: That will never happen.
WIFE: And why not?
HUSBAND: It's very simple. I love you and I already told you -- I'll wait for you.
WIFE: No matter how long I might be gone?
HUSBAND: I'll be here ready to show you I love you. Can Bob give you that?
WIFE: Bob loves me.
HUSBAND: Not with the same degree of love that I have.
WIFE: Of course he does.
HUSBAND: He can't.
WIFE: Bob loves me. I'm completely happy with Bob.
HUSBAND: You're just in love with no responsibility. But you won't be able to escape it. How will Bob's love hold up to everyday problems and stresses?
WIFE: We'll have each other. Why don't you want me to be happy?
HUSBAND: Believe me, that's all I think about.
WIFE: If you do then you'd give me a divorce.
HUSBAND: Never.
WIFE: Our love will be finished.
HUSBAND: Never.
WIFE: It's finished now.
HUSBAND: Not as long as I love you.
WIFE: But how can you love me? You don't know all the terrible things I've done.
HUSBAND: I don't want to know.
WIFE: I want to tell you.
HUSBAND: I want to tell you something first.
WIFE: What?
HUSBAND: I forgive you.
WIFE: You don't know all the things.
HUSBAND: I don't have to know anything you've done to forgive you.
WIFE: If you knew the things I've done ... If you knew, you wouldn't forgive.
HUSBAND: It doesn't make a bit of difference. I forgive you.
WIFE: (CRYING) No. No.
HUSBAND: (HOLDING HER) Yes. Yes.
WIFE: You can't forgive.
HUSBAND: I can and I do. I forgive you.
WIFE: How can you? How?
HUSBAND: I already told you. I decided to forgive.
WIFE: You decided...?
HUSBAND: I decided to forgive you, just as I decided to love you.
Divorce is a decision, just as love is a decision.
