A creche with several figurines
In my family, we love to decorate for Christmas. We like all the candles, angels, and ornaments, and we enjoy collecting Christmas decorations from year to year. I collect nativity scenes. (Display the creche.) I wanted to share this one with you today.
A nativity scene can help us remember what the Christmas story is all about. Let me demonstrate. Would you help me with these figures? (Pass out all the figurines except baby Jesus.)
Does anyone have the angel? The angel came and told Mary that she would be the mother of God's son. An angel also came to Joseph in a dream and told him not to be afraid and to make Mary his wife. Angels appeared one more time in the story, on the night Jesus was born. An angel came to the shepherds and told them that the savior of the world had been born in Bethlehem.
Who's got Mary? Mary was a young woman chosen by God to be the mother of God's son. She must have been afraid and confused when the angel came to her, but she was an obedient young lady and she trusted God.
Where's Joseph? Joseph was Mary's husband and he would be Jesus' father here on earth. What a responsibility Joseph had!
It seems to me there were lots of animals in this story. Does anyone have animals? There were animals in the stable where Jesus was born in Bethlehem. You remember, there was no room in the inn so Mary and Joseph had to stay in the stable with the animals.
There, isn't that a great story? I told you the nativity scene could help us remember. What's the matter? Something's missing? What's missing? (Children respond.) Jesus is missing! There is no Christmas without Jesus. (Put the baby Jesus in the center of the creche.) All the other characters don't really matter if we forget about the Lord.
Boys and girls, Christmas comes each year and we get all excited about the gifts, the parties, and the presents, but we miss Christmas altogether if we forget that Jesus is the reason we celebrate. He came to earth for us and if we leave him out of our Christmas celebrations, there is no Christmas.
I hope you have a blessed Christmas season, with Jesus at the center of everything you do. God bless you.
