Don't Let The Clock Run Your Life

Object:
a clock with a loud tick tock
And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?
-- Luke 12:25
Does anyone here know what time it is? (let them answer) How long have you been here? (let them answer) What time are you leaving? (let them answer) Do you remember what time you ate breakfast? (let them answer) What time is your favorite television show? (let them answer)
Time is not really important to you, is it? (let them answer) But time can be very important to your parents. Almost all adults wear a watch, don't they? (let them answer) Some people carry a date book, which tells them of all of the appointments and what time they have to be at the appointment. Some people carry a little computer that allows them to know the time of their appointments but also has notes about what the meeting is about. Cell phones tell you the time because you never know when you are going to get a call or make a call. It is important that you call at exactly the right time or you will not reach the person but instead you will need to leave a message.
I brought along my clock so I could keep inside of the time I get to talk to you. (point to the clock and show them how long you have to share God's Word with them) It sure does make us sound busy and very often we worry about keeping all of those times. There is a meeting at the office, the meeting with the customer, the date for dinner, the date to make the phone call, and of course the date to call all of the others who want to be at the same business meeting as the person you just called on your cell phone.
Well, as you can see I am running out of time. I want to tell you what God's answer is to all of the running and worry. God asked us how helpful our worrying is about something or someplace we have to be. God asked us if it will add one hour to our life. Not just an hour to our day, or the week or the month or the year but to our lives. Then God says to us that nothing we do will add an hour to our life. God says that we should relax and enjoy more of the good things that we want to do rather than to rush around and do all of the things we think we have to do. They are not all that important.
This is the best part of dying and our friend, Dick, is really enjoying his new life. In heaven I doubt if they have clocks telling us how long we have to get this or that done. I doubt that we have date books or computer books that keep our schedule every day. Instead life with God is one of sharing and caring for each other and for the love of God.
The next time you see a clock and it is ticking away the minutes I want you to think about what Jesus told us. We can rush all that we want but when our lives are over we will spend it with Jesus and we will learn to really enjoy each other. Let the clock help you, but don't let the clock run your life. Amen.
