Don't Throw It Away!
Children's sermon

Children's Sermons
Object:
A wastebasket containing items that would be reused: examples are an empty milk carton, a plastic coffee can top (Frisbee shape), a box, and so forth.
Message: This morning I brought something with me that we probably use every day of our lives. (Show the wastebasket.) Do any of you have wastebaskets at home? Of course you do! What is a wastebasket for? That's right, to put our trash in. But have you ever noticed that a lot of things in wastebaskets can still be used to make something else?
Today I brought this wastebasket filled with items we had thrown out at our house. I wondered if we could use our imaginations and come up with some ideas for reusing these things. (Show each of the items in the basket and ask the children what they thought it could be used for.) Hey, that was great! In every case, you were able to look at something that had been thrown away and thought of a new way to use it!
That is what the Bible is talking about when it says that God made us alive in Christ Jesus, even when we were dead in our trespasses. We have all done things that are wrong. We have all turned away from God at times in our lives saying we want to follow our own ideas rather than His. And even though He could have punished us for that, He chose to send His Son for us instead. He took our broken and stained lives, much like the things in this wastebasket, and said, "I will make them into my people who love and serve me." Jesus can take even the most broken of lives (show the worst item in the wastebasket) and give us new life.
