Pastor: Wasn't that a great football game at the high school yesterday, Peter? (No response) I said wasn't that a great football game yesterday?
Peter: Oh, Pastor, I'm sorry. I had my mind on something else.
Pastor: So I see. Want to talk about it?
Peter: I was just thinking about what you said in your sermon last week.
Pastor: I said a lot of things in my sermon. I mean a lot of things! What part are you talking about?
Peter: The part about how important it is to accept Jesus into your heart while you're still young.
Pastor: That's true.
Peter: What's the difference as long as you do it before you die?
Pastor: Well, there are different reasons. For one, we don't know how long we will live and we might wait too long. But here's another one. Let me see ... how can I explain this? Peter, think about that football game we saw Saturday.
Peter: Okay. Now what?
Pastor: Let's compare it to your lifetime.
Peter: My lifetime? If I got tackled that many times in a day, my lifetime wouldn't be very long ... or very pleasant!
Pastor: Oh, Peter ... let me explain. Suppose you wanted to be on the team and you could join anytime you wanted. If you started in the training camp, you could prepare for the season, and if you were really good at something, say punting, or field goals ...
Peter: How about quarterback?
Pastor: Okay, quarterback. Anyway, you could spend time developing these areas, so you could do your best.
Peter: I can see me now ... Big Peter, the all-star! Rah! Rah! Rah!
Pastor: Simmer down, Big Peter, that's not the end of the story. What if you joined in the middle of the season? You would be limited as to what you could do.
Peter: Hmmm ...
Pastor: And finally, what if you became a member of the team after the season was over?
Peter: Well, that would mean I hadn't done anything but join the team.
Pastor: Exactly!
Peter: Exactly what, Pastor?
Pastor: When we accept Jesus early in life, we are starting out in training camp. We can study and prepare ourselves for whatever God wants us to do, like be a Sunday school teacher or a minister or a missionary. But the later you wait, the more opportunities you will miss in life.
Peter: Well, what do you mean about joining when the season is over?
Pastor: That would be someone who accepts Jesus just before they die. They will go to heaven, but that's all. Their life has already been spent.
Peter: I see! That's what you meant last Sunday when you said in your sermon "not just a soul saved, but a soul and a life."
Pastor: That's right, Peter.
Peter: Pastor, can I join Jesus' team today?
Pastor: You sure can, Peter. Let's pray about it right now.
Lord, we thank you for the opportunity you give us to be a part of your team. Help us to open our hearts to Jesus, so we may welcome him into our lives, and then help us to follow his commands, so we can be helpful members of your team. Amen.
