He Gives Power
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint (Isaiah 40:28-31 NRSV).
Worldwide in nearly every country and tradition, the eagle is considered a symbol of power and strength. Several of the biblical writers were well aware of this.
The word "eagle" is used 34 times in the Bible. The most famous biblical quotation is the scripture used above. If only we could mount up with wings like eagles! Or maybe we can if we believe the truth of Isaiah 40:28-31.
As we face the storms of life, are we more like a chicken or an eagle? An eagle, unless it must stay with its young or the eggs in a nest, will ride above the storm. Sensing an approaching storm it will spread its wings and rise on the thermals and vanguard winds circling ever higher and higher until at several thousand feet it is above the storm. At the same time, chickens confined to the ground may be soaked and blown around resulting in a serious sickness.
There are eight kinds of eagles known in Palestine and Israel. Most notable is the golden eagle, a giant bird with a wingspan of seven or eight feet. It is interesting that the female is more than ten percent larger than the male. With their incredible vision, about four times sharper than human vision, they can spot a rabbit from a distance of one mile or spot another eagle soaring from a distance of fifteen to thirty miles!
Lessons From The Eagle
Look to God for that renewal of strength that he provides. Take time to wait upon the Lord, especially during those times of stress, anxiety, or need.
Prayer
All-powerful and all-loving God, as we turn our eyes upon Jesus give us the clarity of vision to see your will and the strength to follow it. May we truly mount up with wings like eagles, knowing your indwelling power and strength. Yes, Lord! Amen!
