Easter 3
Poems
A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
How slow was the walk to Emmaus!
How fast do they run in return!
And between the two trips, what excitement.
To tell it, their lips fairly burn.
'We have been with the Lord.' they are crying.
'We have seen Him alive.' they exclaim.
'In the breaking of bread, we perceived Him.
Though He died, He’s alive!' they proclaim.
Then they told how their hearts burned within them
as the prophecies made them aware.
But they hardly had finished their witness,
when the Lord Himself stood with them there.
And He said to them, 'Peace be upon you.
Do not fear. It is I, not a ghost.
See my hands and my feet. You may touch me.'
For their hearts filled with fear uppermost.
There’s a lesson or two we could learn here,
as we think of those men on that day.
When we witness to Jesus in our lives,
He may come in among us and stay.
So, when two or three gather together
and the Lord, as He promised, is here,
then the threats of the world aren’t important.
He has conquered the world and its fear.
How fast do they run in return!
And between the two trips, what excitement.
To tell it, their lips fairly burn.
'We have been with the Lord.' they are crying.
'We have seen Him alive.' they exclaim.
'In the breaking of bread, we perceived Him.
