Easter 4
Worship
Lectionary Worship Workbook, Series IV, Cycle C
Soul Motion
Object:
The Easter story is about the triumph of creativity.
We are all entombed with large boulders blocking our escape
A liberation to the extent our creativity is blocked or stifled.
-- Matthew Fox, Creativity
Call To Worship
Leader: Ah, Sunday again. In some parts of the world this is lambing season. Of course, as we read today's scriptures, it's lambing season for us, too, for we recognize Jesus as the Good Shepherd, whose voice we know, and whom we choose to follow.
People: God, Jesus, is our shepherd, we shall not want for anything! Our souls will be nourished with living water and good foods. When times are difficult, we have faith that God goes with us, giving us strength for each task.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Living God -- how wonderful life is in this moment. Thank you for the tranquility of generations gathered here. Together we have so many opportunities to show our love for you and your creatures! Your presence enlivens us and gives us courage for tomorrow. Sing and dance with us, we pray. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
Our words and our behaviors reveal our ethical and moral values. Look within yourself. Is your living a consistent whole? Pray the printed prayer with me and then make your private prayers.
Community Confession (Unison)
Renewing God -- how grateful we are for the life and teachings of Jesus, grateful that he challenged the first-century disciples and continues to challenge us to live beyond boundaries that society sets in our way.
Reveal to us the shadows in our souls; help us make changes until we walk in your light. Amen.
Sermon Idea
John 10:33 raises twenty-first-century questions: While we explore "spirituality" with elements from several world religions, do we risk stoning Jesus? Do we thwart God's goodness in the world by not recognizing the difference between "social spirituality" and the "journey of the heart to God"? Once someone has experienced being in the "Heart of God," that is always the goal of meditation, prayer, and service. Jesus told his audience in John 10 that once someone has been close to him, no one could be convinced that he might not be of God. Notice that when threatened, Jesus returned to the place of his baptism and initiation.
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
Jesus of Nazareth had the courage to challenge the institutions of his day.
He had the strength and wisdom to make heaven a viable option.
In spite of suffering and death, he was faithful to his vision;
His teachings have influenced all the world.
He imaged God as divine parent, as divine and benevolent ruler, and as creator of all the world.
We believe that God is still creating and welcomes us to participate to make heaven available on earth.
Through life and death, God is with us.
Offertory Statement (Leader)
We have opportunity to bless and heal as we care for each other and maintain this house of prayer.
Doxology
Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow, tune: OLD HUNDREDTH
Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
Praise God, all creatures here below.
Praise God, above you heavenly hosts.
Creator, Christ, and Holy Ghost.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Energy of the Universe -- thank you for what we have and for the opportunity to make goodness happen in this building and on this street. We are your faithful people right here. We love you. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers (Leader or Readers)
God Inside and Outside -- when we are still we notice your characteristics everywhere: blue sky lit with the sun by day and the stars by night; soil sprouting grasses and vegetables; people helping people; pets and people companioning one another! Within we recognize your creative activities in our souls and minds. We pray that everyone who is drawn toward you will find your energizing affirmation.
God for Every Continent -- we remember that we have prayed for peace between nations for a very long time. We see ancient hatreds acted out now with automatic and long-distance weapons. We hear of children being killed before they can even read and write. We hear of them starving because food can't get to them. We can only imagine the suffering that mothers and fathers must endure as they watch their dreams die. What do you feel, God? Are there no wise leaders on this planet like there were no faithful people in Sodom? Are there so few people who recognize your voice that we are ineffective in peacemaking? We pray for collaboration and compromise between individuals who imprison the common good. We pray for the leaders of our country. Grant them political savvy and personal grace so that peace can be experienced in every land.
Healing God -- as we go about our daily chores, we are aware that our bodies are wondrously made. We're also aware that they can be diseased and suffer strokes, cancers grow, bones break, and brains atrophy. Whatever our bodies do, keep us safe in your love. However our bodies deal with each stage of life, give us courage and strength to look up and around; give us ears to hear and minds to patiently be available for your still small voice. Amen.
Benediction (Leader)
Life is not a dead end;
It is a surprising journey to God.
Say "Yes" to life;
Laugh each day and unwind the threads of the world.
Notice new life around each corner.
Make new dreams and cultivate a glad heart!
Christ lives!
