Easter 6
Worship
Lectionary Worship Workbook, Series IV, Cycle C
Soul Motion
Object:
The Easter story is about the triumph of creativity.
We are all entombed with large boulders blocking our escape
And liberation to the extent our creativity is blocked or stifled.
-- Matthew Fox, Creativity
Call To Worship
Leader: God is here! The Holy One looks on us with kindness.
People: People look at us from city hall, in the grocery store, and at the university and they recognize that we are intentional about our spiritual journeys; they acknowledge that God is leading us in twenty-first century adventures for the soul.
Leader: Our behaviors must indicate that we are aligned with the Holy One for justice for those who do not have a voice in our society.
People: Our relationships and our care for the earth, too, must show our appreciation for this planet and its systems.
Leader: God is here! We feel the mysterious Divine Presence.
Thanksgiving Prayer (Unison)
Ever-Living God -- you bless us with strength and beauty, with truthfulness and satisfying relationships. We appreciate who you are and who you are making us to be. In this hour, stretch our minds and expand our souls so that we may dream ways to make your love palpable in this neighborhood, this church, and this nation. We eagerly listen for your voice. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
Our words and our behaviors indicate the beliefs that motivate us. Sometimes our soul's hopes are betrayed by what comes out of our mouths and by where we go. These silent moments can reveal changes that your mind and body need to make. Pray the printed prayer with me and then make your private prayers.
Community Confession (Unison)
Renewing God -- thank you for being at home with us.
We want our daily living to honor your presence.
Free us from past expectations about what is enough and what is due us.
Open our minds to people different from ourselves.
Let us participate with the Spirit's movement. Amen.
Sermon Idea
How often can people hear a story and find new inspiration? The Acts story of Lydia is a favorite of women throughout the church. Prior to Paul's arrival at the riverside to talk to the women (I wonder why he chose not to go to the city gates and speak with the men?), he had some difficulty being welcomed to tell his message. A dream finally guided him to Macedonia. Would we trust a dream to guide us to a new place and a new people? How do we "read" the Spirit's guidance? Are we willing to articulate our faith story when we are with strangers? Would we dare invite an unexpected visiting teacher to our homes for the night? How times have changed since Paul prayed with Lydia!
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
Jesus of Nazareth had the courage to challenge the institutions of his day.
He had the strength and wisdom to make heaven a viable option.
In spite of suffering and death, he was faithful to his vision;
His teachings have influenced all the world.
He imaged God as divine parent, divine and benevolent ruler, and as Creator of all the world.
We believe that God is still creating and welcomes us to participate to make heaven available on earth.
Through life and death, God is with us.
Offertory Statement (Leader)
Lydia decided to participate with the Spirit and with Paul. We participate with each other by sharing the burdens of building care, by feeding homeless neighbors, and by investing in social action for the good of humankind. The baskets are large enough to hold the money you can give.
Doxology
Angels We Have Heard On High (refrain)
Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Energy of the Universe -- thank you for what we have and for the ability to make goodness happen in many places on this planet. We are your faithful people right here. We love you. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers (Leader or Readers)
God of Many Names -- we are glad the story of Lydia working with Paul has survived time and editing. We think of them as bold and adventuresome. We'd like to have these traits, too, so we can participate with your kingdom making. Live in us so justice comes to our city; live through us so people have food; live around us as collaboration and peacefulness.
God of New Life -- thank you for the good things about our country. Use our minds and mouths to build community. Use our creative energies to include refugees and help them make a home in this foreign environment. Be real to our children so they may love you and themselves. Stir our church family to be yeast for good education, for a wholesome food supply, and for non-violent entertainment.
God of the Continents -- the planet seems so small sometimes! We pray for peace in every nation. Remove destructive leaders and refresh countries whose infrastructures are decimated. Rain awareness and skill on United States leaders so Americans do not contribute to the cyclones of terror that hit other continents.
God of Health and Illness -- we are glad when our bodies function well; we are discomforted when they ache and when they are struggling with disease. Show us how to eat for health; keep us alert to environments that give us headaches. Show us how to cooperate with you for wholeness in body and mind. Heal us from head to toe. Amen.
Benediction (Leader)
Life is not a dead end;
It is a surprising journey to God.
Say "Yes" to life;
Laugh each day and unwind the threads of the world.
Notice new life around each corner.
Make new dreams and cultivate a glad heart!
Christ lives!
