Epiphany 1
Poems
A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
John went into the wilderness
and there began to preach.
Multitudes came out to him.
Repentance did he teach.
From all Judea they went out
to see this man of God.
All girdled round with camel skin
he must have looked quite odd.
Said John, 'With water I baptize
to take away all sin
and lift the burden from your back
so new life can begin.
There will be one, come after me,
whose shoes I can’t unlace.
He’ll baptize you with Spirit and
you’ll meet God face to face.'
Then came a strange and wondrous thing
for Jesus came to John
and asked to be baptized by him.
The day was nearly gone.
But, as into the stream he went,
the heavens opened wide.
And Spirit, as a dove came down
and flew there at his side.
And echoing, a voice was heard
as God the moment seized.
'Thou art my well-beloved Son
in whom I am well pleased.'
What happened there to Jesus, friends,
has also come to you.
For you are called, as Jesus was,
to learn God’s will to do.
And we can walk at Jesus’ side.
He’ll be our guide and stay.
For he’s our elder brother
and he’s with us all the way.
and there began to preach.
