The Eye Of The Needle

Matthew To Revelation
Object: a needle and your pet dog or cat
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever been to a zoo? (let them answer) Did you like it? (let them answer) I love to go to zoos and see all of the wonderful animals that God made to live in this world. One of the animals in the zoo that I have visited is a very strange animal. It is called a camel. How many of you know what a camel looks like? (let them answer) Will you describe a camel to me? (let someone tell you about the camels he or she has seen) That sounds like the same camel I saw.
I wanted to bring a camel with me to church this morning because that is the animal that Jesus talked about in the lesson that I read to you today. But I couldn't find one anywhere so I thought that I would bring the next best thing. (bring out your dog or cat) This is my cat (dog), and I just love him (her).
I also brought along a needle with me because Jesus also talked about needles. Jesus said that it was easier for a camel to walk through the eye of a needle than it was for a person to get into the kingdom of heaven. Do you know what the eye of a needle is? (let them answer) It's not very big, is it? Do you think a camel is bigger than my cat? (let them answer) Do you think I can put my cat through the eye of the needle? (let them answer) I am going to try and put my cat through the eye of this needle. (make an attempt to put your cat or dog through the needle) I don't think this is going to work. If this is true, and we know that a camel is even bigger, then I think Jesus must have meant that it will be very difficult for a rich person to get into heaven. Don't you?
I think Jesus told this little story to make all of us think pretty hard about what is really important. Putting a camel through the eye of a needle is impossible. But Jesus wanted us to know that being rich is not the greatest thing in the world. Having money is not so great. It is far greater to be a part of God's people. If we have money, we should share it and help people with our money. Money is a gift from God like being a teacher or a doctor or like anything else that is meant to be shared. If we keep all of our money to ourselves, then we are not sharing our gift. If we do not share, then we are selfish, and that is the kind of a sin that could keep us out of heaven. Jesus knew some things about us that we don't like to know. The more money we have the more we want and very often the less we share.
If you are like that or you know someone like that, then tell them what Jesus said about the camel and the eye of a needle. If you want to be part of God's world, then share and give so that you don't have the same kind of trouble that my cat had with the needle this morning.
