LECTIONARY WORSHIP AIDS
Call to Worship
Pastor:
Life is a test of faith day after day.
People:
Day after day God proves himself worthy of our trust.
Pastor:
Each day God asks that we put him first in our lives, and give him our full surrender.
People:
We trust God to be all that he promises. May we be all that he asks of us.
Collect
O Lord, our great Provider, you have promised to be our God, and have called us to be your children. Give us the faith to let you be our God, and the commitment to live as your children; that we may experience the blessing of a close relationship with you. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We feel your prodding, Lord, for us to let go and let you be our God. But life has such a grip on us that we find it difficult to come in full surrender to you. Forgive our shallow commitment when we give you only lip service. Give us the strength, courage, and will to live by faith, and to offer true commitment of ourselves to you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Draw Thou My Soul, O Christ"
"Father, I Stretch My Hands to Thee"
"My Faith Looks Up to Thee"
"O For a Faith That Will Not Shrink"
PROPER 5
Sunday between June 5 and 11 inclusive
(If after Trinity Sunday)
Second Lesson: Romans 4:13-18
Theme:
The faith of Abraham
Call to Worship
Pastor:
Abraham was a godly person because he had complete faith in God's promises.
People:
God accepted Abraham as being righteous because he had that kind of faith in God.
Pastor:
We, too, can be accepted as righteous, by putting our faith in Jesus, who died for our sins, granting us redemption.
People:
What a wonderful salvation God promises through Jesus! He is our Savior in whom we put our faith.
Collect
Father in heaven, who considers righteous those who believe the promises you make: Give us faith like that of Abraham; that we may be accepted as righteous by our faith in Jesus, who promises forgiveness to all who believe. In his name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We want to be considered righteous, Father, but our sins are so many. And when we realize how sinful we are, it is difficult to feel we are justified. Forgive us for our many sins, but especially for our weak faith in the promises of Jesus to redeem us. Lead us into an acceptance of salvation, believing we are forgiven, and therefore accepted as righteous by the grace of Jesus, through whom we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Have Faith in God, My Heart"
"My Hope Is Built"
"Standing on the Promises"
" 'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus"
PROPER 5

Gospel:
Matthew 9:9-13
Theme:
Jesus demonstrates God's mercy
Call to Worship
Pastor:
God accepts us in his service, not by any righteousness of ours, but simply because of his mercy.
People:
Our unworthiness prevents us many times from giving ourselves in service to our Lord.
Pastor:
Jesus will help us overcome that if we remember he called Matthew, and even sat at table with other religious outcasts.
People:
We claim God's mercy, and ask him to use us in his service, forgiving our past sins.
Collect
Gracious Father, whose Son demonstrated your mercy by associating with sinners, even calling them into your service: Convince us of your mercy for us, that we may surrender ourselves to you to be used according to your will. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We believe in your forgiveness, Father; but sin still hinders our total commitment to your service. Forgive us for asking for your forgiveness and then letting our sins have enough power to limit our discipleship. Give us your mercy; that we may respond whole-heartedly, assured of your cleansing, and willing to be in your service. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Hymns
"Amazing Grace!"
"Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing"
"Depth of Mercy"
"There's a Wideness in God's Mercy"
