Call to Worship (based on Psalm 130)
Leader: Wait for the Lord! My soul waits, and in his word I hope.
Women: My soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning.
Men: More than those who watch for the morning.
Leader: O Israel, hope in the Lord!
Women: For with the Lord there is steadfast love,
Men: With God is great power to redeem.
All: It is God who will redeem us from all our iniquities. Let us worship God.
Call to Confession
Out of the depths we call to you, God. God, hear our voices - be attentive to the voice of our supplication as we confess our sins together.
Prayer of Confession
Mighty God, we worry so much. No matter how much we try we cannot be like the lilies of the field. We worry about our health, our work, our families, and our possessions. Help us to know that you are with us. We know that you are our help in times of trouble. But we want control of our lives. We want to know that the things we do will keep us safe and make us happy. Forgive us, God, for not trusting you. We don't understand that your steadfast love is our happiness. Help us to trust in your saving grace, given freely through Jesus Christ, our savior. Amen.
Assurance of Forgiveness
In Romans 8, Paul assures us: "To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. If the Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, this God will give life to your mortal bodies also through God's Spirit that dwells in you." Hallelujah! We are forgiven. Amen.
Scripture Readings
Ezekiel 37:1--14; Psalm 130; Romans 8:6--11; John 11:1--45: All four of the scripture readings for today are about new life in God. The Ezekiel passage is best done by one person playing Ezekiel - retelling this conversation and amazing feat. It should be done from the floor of the sanctuary and memorized. It would be especially meaningful if the person playing Ezekiel were dressed as a desert prophet. Psalm 130 and the Romans passage have been used in the prayers for today. John 11:1--45 is very long, but is a particularly dramatic passage and could be well told as drama. It could be read by one person and pantomimed by the cast of characters - Mary, Martha, Messenger, Jesus, several Disciples, Thomas, several Mourners, Lazarus. The Narrator must be able to read with great impact, slowing up for the pantomiming to be effective. A good hymn to be sung after the reading would be When Jesus Wept.
Call to Offering
God, there is so much sadness in the world. May our offerings go to bring joy to the despondent and new life to people without hope. Let us be generous in our giving.
Prayer of Dedication
Generous and loving God, you give us life abundant. Bless our gifts that they may help those who suffer in darkness. May these gifts bring new light to the world. Amen.
Benediction
Leader: God says, "I will put my Spirit in you, and you shall live."
People: We live to go with God.
Leader: Peace be with you as you leave this place.
People: We leave, renewed in spirit, to do God's work in the world.
Leader: Go with God. Amen.
