Fifth Sunday In Lent
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Ezekiel 37:1-14
Theme: You Shall Live
Call To Worship
Leader: And God said, "You shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord." Come, let us surround ourselves with the compassion of God who gathers up our brokenness and binds it with the wholeness of a new vitality.
People: We come with all our brokenness. We come in search of new life. We come to worship our compassionate Creator.
Collect
Did you give us life from a distance, then set us loose, O God? We cannot fathom one so faithfully close as to impart breath to flagging spirits. We want to be in control of our own lives. With a quiet alleluia, let us hear you whisper, "You shall live." Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We worry about clothing and length of hair, about poundage and heft, and stuff and things -- then wonder why our soul is a bag of dry bones. Hearten us, that we might become aware of your spirit within us. Weaken our resistance to accepting your continuous renewal of creation within us. Through Christ. Amen.
24A Hymns
"It Only Takes A Spark" Tune: PASS IT ON
"March On, O Soul, With Strength" Tune: ARTHUR'S SEAT
"Rock Of Ages, Cleft For Me" Tune: TOPLADY
*****
Second Lesson: Romans 8:6-11
Theme: Spirit Is Life
Call To Worship
As we draw closer to the closing days of Jesus' earthly life, let us remember Paul's words to the Romans: To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
Collect
Jesus' death on the cross changes forever how we understand death and life. Thank you, Merciful God, for this gift of your Jesus. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Death surrounds us, O God -- tragedies of disease and accident, release from bodies too worn out to live, deaths from violence, sometimes funeral after funeral. We shy from death because each dying reminds us of our own. Help us to see that while grief, loss, and endings are part of death's reality, death is not the end of us. Because of Good Friday, let us know the peace of setting our minds on the Spirit dwelling within us. Amen.
24A Hymns
"Wake, My Soul" Tune: HAYDN
"Time Moves Forward On Its Way" Tune: POUCHER
"Holy Spirit, Truth Divine" Tune: MERCY
*****
Gospel: John 11:1-45
Theme: The Resurrection, The Life
Call To Worship
Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
Collect
We believe. We go forth in your name, O God, because we believe that you are the resurrection and the life. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Even as Jesus attempted to prepare his disciples for his death through the resurrecting of Lazarus, we also cannot fully understand death until we experience it. How can we explain, O God, that Christ's resurrection is not something to believe with our heads? Rather, belief somehow seizes us. Belief takes hold of us and death's terror loses its power. Amen.
24A Hymns
"O God Of Strength" Tune: WELWYN
"Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior" Tune: PASS ME NOT
"Forth In [Thy][Your] Name, O Lord, I Go" Tune: DUKE STREET or MORNING HYMN
