Series VII, Cycle A
Call To Worship (Isaiah 63:7)
I will recount the gracious deeds of the Lord, the praiseworthy acts of the Lord, because of all that the Lord has done for us, and the great favor to the house of Israel that he has shown them according to his mercy, according to the abundance of his steadfast love.
Collect (Psalm 148)
(Unison) Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights!
Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his host!
Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars!
Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens!
Let them praise the name of the Lord, for he commanded and they were created.
He established them forever and ever; he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed.
Praise the Lord from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and frost, stormy wind fulfilling his command!
Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars!
Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds!
Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth!
Young men and women alike, old and young together!
Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven.
He has raised up a horn for his people, praise for all his faithful, for the people of Israel who are close to him. Praise the Lord!
Prayer Of Confession
Lord of all creation, your vision for the universe is exalted. At times we fail to see your hand in the snow, in the cold, in the ice, and we complain when your power is displayed in all its glory. Forgive us, and grant us a constant reminder of your presence in all the events of our day. Amen.
Hymns
"To Us A Child Of Hope Is Born"
"The First Noel"
"Still, Still, Still"
First Sunday After Christmas/The Holy Family
Second Lesson: Hebrews 2:10-18
Theme: The Pioneer Of Our Salvation
Call To Worship (Hebrews 2:10)
It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
Collect
Come Lord, born again in our hearts this season, live brightly in our lives and guide us in our worship this day. We praise you with all of creation. We praise you with all people around the world. We praise you for who you are. We praise you for what you have done for us. Bless us in our gathering as we seek to come together as your people who love you, and worship you, and follow you. These things we pray in your mighty name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
God who walks with us, who never abandons us, how often we think we deserve a straight path with no bumps or bruises on our way. Yet you were made perfect through suffering, and we claim we want to walk in your footsteps, at least when it suits us. Make us worthy to be counted your disciples in good times and bad. Mold us into your people. We follow your steps, knowing they lead to glory. Amen.
Hymns
"Marching To Zion"
"O Come All Ye Faithful"
"What A Friend We Have In Jesus"
First Sunday After Christmas/The Holy Family
Gospel Lesson: Matthew 2:13-23
Theme: The Evil Done In God's Name
Call To Worship
One: God enters history and becomes a fugitive.
All: The Word becomes flesh and a refugee.
One: The Light shines in the darkness,
All: But the forces of darkness lash out against the innocent.
One: Now we wait for your vision, in our waking and in our dreaming. Speak to us today, Lord of life and light.
Collect
O Lord, the wailing. O Lord, the crying. It seems the time of celebration is barely past and the world intrudes on our peace. But it is a false peace if we ignore your will for your people. Inspire us in our worship today to bring hope and comfort near and far. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
There is weeping, Lord, without consolation, wailing and lamentation without comfort or peace. Are we failing to act to the opportunities you give us, both near at hand and around the globe? No more will we accept with complacency the evil done in your name, God of justice. This is your world. Let your will be done, with us and through us. Amen.
Hymns
"O Come, All Ye Faithful"
"What Child is This?"
"On Eagle's Wings"
