FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids -- Series C
First Lesson: Jeremiah 33:14-16
Theme: The Lord is our righteousness
Call to Worship
Pastor:
May the blessings of Advent be yours!
People:
We praise God for these blessings he gives through his Son Jesus.
Pastor:
His Son, the promised Branch of David, comes to give us deliverance.
People:
He is our righteousness! On him we depend for our salvation.
Collect
Almighty God, the ruler of all nations, and authority of all rulers: Refresh our spirits this Advent as we celebrate the coming of the Branch of David, the supreme Ruler of all mankind, even Jesus your Son through whom we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We begin a new year in the Christian Faith, our Father, and confess we need to get better acquainted with your Son the Branch of David. Our lives have not been a banner which hails him as our righteousness. Instead, our sins have been our witness. Consequently we have shared in building a society in need of our Lord's presence. Come to us now with forgiveness that will remove our sins from us. Move us to give our lives to you in full surrender. We pray through Christ, our righteousness. Amen.
Hymns
"All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name"
"Come, Thou Almighty King"
"Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus"
"Hail to the Lord's Anointed"
"The Heavens Declare Thy Glory, Lord"
No. 2 - FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT
Second Lesson: 1 Thessalonians 3:9-4:2
Theme: Grow in love in preparation for our Lord's Advent
Call to Worship
Pastor:
Christian friends, we begin a new year in the Church as we prepare for Christ's advent.
People:
We thank God for this Advent Season to remind us of the gift of his Son, and his promised return.
Pastor:
Our thankfulness ought to result in an honest expression of love for one another, that we may be prepared for the advent of our Lord.
People:
May God cause our love for one another to grow more and more.
Collect
Almighty God, our loving Father, whose love has come to us in the advent of your Son: Give birth to that same kind of love in our hearts toward one another; that we may become a fellowship of people prepared for the return of our Lord, through whom we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Our Father, our love relationships get all out of proportion so easily. We are people who love, but sometimes we love things, or our friends, more than we love you. Then there are other times when we love you so much, but we cannot find it in our hearts to love one another. Forgive us for making love such a small thing. Help us to experience love as a growing fellowship that knows no bounds. Thus may we be strengthened in our commitment as we wait for our Lord, through whom we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Blest Be the Tie That Binds"
"Jesus, United by Thy Grace"
"Love Came Down at Christmas"
"O Day of God, Draw Nigh"
"Lord Christ, When First Thou Cam'st"
No. 3 - FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT
Gospel:
Luke 21:25-36
Theme: Watch for Christ's return
Call to Worship
Pastor:
Advent is a season that calls us to attention. We need to be alert, ready to meet our Lord at any time.
People:
We are not anxious for the world to come to an end; but we will be glad to meet Jesus whenever that time comes.
Pastor:
Many people have already met Jesus in eternity even though the end of the world has not come.
People:
We have great expectations of meeting Jesus whenever he is ready!
Collect
God our Father, who will determine when we are to make our transition from this temporary life to the eternal: Keep our minds sensitive to your warnings, and our hearts strengthened by your presence. May we not become weary, or careless in idleness, forgetful of our accountability to you. In our Master's Name. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Dear Lord, we have been afraid to think seriously about your return, because we have not been ready. Forgive us for living as if we could control time, and delay a final reckoning. Forgive us for living as if you did not know what has been going on in our lives. May this Advent season give us a new understanding of what it means to be expecting you. Replace the fear we have, with the joy of knowing our reunion will be wonderful! Amen.
Hymns
"Love Divine, All Loves Excelling"
"My Soul, Be on Thy Guard"
"Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending"
"Watchman, Tell Us of the Night"
