Call to Worship
(Voices should be in various places in the congregation and stand to read their statement)
Voice 1: Come; let us walk in the light of God.
Voice 2: I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the Lord."
Voice 3: Peace be within your walls, and security within your towers.
Voice 4: Let us lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.
Voice 5: Keep awake for you don't know which day your Lord is coming.
Pastor: On this first Sunday in Advent, let us heed the words of scripture and join together to worship our God.
Unison: Let us pass the peace of God to one another. (Peace be with you, and also with you.)
Lighting of the Advent Wreath Candle (Peace, Light)
(Choose a family from the congregation)
Voice 1: For everyone, 'neath their vine and fig tree, shall live in peace and unafraid ...
Voice 2: Today we light the first advent candle, the candle of peace. Peace is like the flame of this candle - it flickers. Sometimes it lights the darkness, sometimes it is snuffed out, and we must attempt to light it again. (Lights candle)
Voice 3: Peace is more than the absence of war - it is the sense of well--being in all people.
Voice 4: God loves us enough to send us the Prince of Peace.
(Congregation sings Shalom Chaverim)
Scripture Reading (Choral Reading based on Psalm 122)
1 Voice: I was glad when they said to me,
All: Let us go to the house of the Lord!
3 Voices: Our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem.
All: Jerusalem was built as a city that is bound firmly together.
1 Voice: To it the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, as was decreed for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord.
3 Voices: For there the thrones for judgment were set up, the thrones of the house of David.
1 Voice: Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
All: May they prosper who love you. Peace be within your walls, and security within your towers.
1 Voice: For the sake of my relatives and friends I will say, "Peace be within you."
All: For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, we will seek your good.
Call to Offering
"For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your good." Let us now seek ways of doing God's work in the world as we bring our offerings of time and money.
Prayer of Dedication
The psalmist tells us, "May they prosper who love you, O God." As we dedicate these gifts, we show our love for you and for neighbor. Help us to use these gifts in the building of peace in your world. Amen.
Benediction
Leader: Now is the moment.
People: The moment for us to wake from sleep.
Leader: Now is the moment to lay aside the works of darkness.
People: We will put on the armor of light.
Leader: Now is the moment to leave the comfort of community and go out into the world.
People: We go to tell the good news of Jesus Christ.
Leader: Peace and joy go with you all. Amen.
