Call to Worship
Leader: Praise God! Praise God from the heavens and from the heights.
People: Joy to the world! The Lord is come!
Leader: Praise God! All the angels, all the heavenly host!
People: Angels, we have heard on high - sweetly singing o'er the plain.
Leader: Praise God, sun and moon; praise God all you shining stars.
People: O morning stars together, proclaim the holy birth,
Leader: Praise God, you highest heavens; God's glory is above earth and heaven.
Unison: Go, tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born!
Prayer of Invocation
Loving God, Christmas has come and the feeling of love lingers on. Help us to savor this feeling as our world begins to get back to normal. Help us remember your glorious and generous gift as we begin rushing around again - trying to maintain our crazy schedules. Give us this time in worship to be renewed and refreshed by your word, and to go once again into the world as your creatures - loving, caring, and joy--filled. Amen.
Scripture Reading
Matthew 2:13--23
Litany for all Children in the World
Leader: A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation. Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled.
Voice 1 (A mother in Palestine): As a Palestinian mother, I weep because my child was killed trying to go to school today in spite of the curfew. He was shot seven times.
Response: Jesus, our brother, save all who are put to the test.
Voice 2 (from Afghanistan): My daughter was beaten for daring to learn to read.
Response: Jesus, our brother, save all who are put to the test.
Voice 3 (from Appalachia): My child did not get her inoculations. She died from complications after she got the measles.
Response: Jesus, our brother, save all who are put to the test.
Voice 4 (from Russia): My baby froze to death in her crib because we had no heat.
Response: Jesus, our brother, save all who are put to the test.
Voice 5 (from the inner city in the United States): I worry about my son because of gang--related violence. He is afraid of the police because he believes they are racists.
Response: Jesus, open our eyes and help us save all innocent children from the Herods of today. We know you are able to save us.
Benediction
May our God, according to great mercy, be with you as you go out into the world.
May God's steadfast love surround you and give you courage to fight the evil that you encounter.
May God's presence lift you up and carry you through. Amen.
