Call To Worship
One: We have seen the action of the Spirit in our walk through scripture this season.
All: The Spirit overshadowed Mary and Jesus is born.
Men: Elizabeth blesses Mary, filled with the Spirit.
Women: Zechariah prophesies under the influence of the Spirit.
Right: Today we remember how Simeon was filled with the Spirit and prophesied in the temple about Jesus.
Left: Today we remember how Anna was filled with the Spirit, and how she began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.
Front: God is present among us, and the Spirit moves in our midst.
Back: We, too, will speak about the child, and about the Spirit of God.
One: As Simeon said, "This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed ...
All: so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed -- and a sword will pierce your own soul too."
Unison Invocation
Lord of all, we know that there is no telling what might happen in our worship when your Spirit is present, but so often we want things to happen according to our schedule instead of according to your will. When Joseph and Mary brought their newborn infant to the temple they did not know Anna and Simeon would be present, nor that they would speak, but we are blessed today, thousands of years later, because they spoke. Simeon continued the song of the angels. Anna prolonged the preaching of the shepherds. The Christmas story is not over in the Bible. We pray this morning in our worship your Spirit will prolong that story in our hearts. Amen.
Morning Prayer
Move in our midst, Spirit of God. Call us to hear the words of our elders, our seniors who are our treasure with their wisdom. Call us to hear the cries of our children, fresh-minted from the hand of God. Call us to risk freely on their behalf as your people. Call us to celebrate our differences which make us one in you. Amen.
Morning Hymn
"Move In Our Midst" by Ken Morse
Offering Prayer
Spirit of God, move in our midst. Let your generosity speak through our acts of giving and living, through the gifts of our wealth, time, energy, love, and concern for each other. Amen.
Scriptural Benediction (based on Luke 2:29-32)
Master, dismiss your servants in peace, according to your word; for our eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.
Children's Benediction
You are God's crown of beauty. Rejoice!
