Theme: Expressing Our Gratitude
Call To Worship
Leader: How good it is to give thanks to the Lord.
People: To sing in honor of the Most High God.
Leader: The Lord's mighty deeds make us glad.
People: Because of what the Lord has done, we sing for joy.
All: Praise be to God!
Collect
God of our ancestors and our God, too, down through the ages you have cared for your people. When they were held in bondage in Egypt you heard their cries and freed them from slavery. You sent your Son, Jesus, to live among us, to be crucified for us, and to be resurrected that we might share in his eternal life. Be with us in this Lenten season that we might truly understand your forgiving love for us, and in response rededicate our lives, offering them to you as our sacrifice of thanksgiving. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, be merciful to us for we have all sinned and fallen short of being the kind of persons you would have us be. We seek your forgiveness that not one of us may be shut out from pardon, and together we may truly serve as your Body on earth. For Jesus' sake. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
O Lord, we would express our gratitude and thanksgiving for your abundant mercies with these gifts and the offering of ourselves for the work of your Church that it may truly be your Body on earth. Amen.
Hymns
"All Praise To Thee For Thou, O King Divine"
"Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed"
"Father, We Thank You"
First Sunday In Lent
Second Lesson: Romans 10:8b-13
Theme: Salvation Is For All
Call To Worship
Leader: God says, "When those who love me call to me, I will answer them."
People: Praise be to God, who can be depended upon.
Leader: The Lord says, "When my children are in trouble, I will be with them."
People: Thanks be to the Lord who is always with us. Amen.
Collect
Heavenly Father, when your Son came to live with us, he underwent rejection, pain, and suffering even to death upon the cross. Through it all he knew he was not alone, for you were with him. We, your present-day disciples, come now seeking reassurance that through all our trials and temptations you are with us. In this time of worship, strengthen our faith and grant us the courage that comes from knowing we are not alone, for you are always with us. We pray in Jesus'Êname. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Loving God, when we are tempted to think we have exclusive claim to your love and care, remind us again that in your eyes there are no differences between your children everywhere, and that you are the Lord of all. Help us so to live that we may be messengers of your love that says: "Everyone who calls out to the Lord for help will be saved." Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Almighty God, accept these gifts we pray, and bless them that they may be used to carry your word of saving love to people everywhere who have not yet heard that if they call upon you for help, they will be saved. Amen.
Hymns
"How Shall They Hear The Word Of God?"
"O Love Divine, What Hast Thou Done"
"At The Name Of Jesus"
First Sunday In Lent
Gospel Lesson: Luke 4:1-13
Theme: The Temptation Of Jesus
Call To Worship
As Jesus began his ministry he was tempted for forty days in order to focus his attention on spiritual things. During this Lenten season of forty days we, too, will be tempted by the forces of evil to seek worldly power, wealth, and physical satisfaction. Let us remain faithful to our spiritual disciplines of prayer, fasting, and caring for others that we may be better prepared to carry out our ministry to the world.
Come, let us worship together!
Collect
Lord, we pray the prayer you taught your disciples that we will not be led into temptation but delivered from evil. During this Lenten season help us to confront the powers of darkness that would keep us from being messengers of the Light that you brought into the world. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, we confess that the same temptations that your Son, Jesus Christ, faced still confront us day by day. Forgive us when we seek power and when we succumb to the attraction of material wealth. May your Holy Spirit strengthen us in our time of trial, and help us to seek your kingdom in all that we do. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Heavenly Father, we lift our songs of praise to you, and now we bring our gifts of thanksgiving. Working together as part of your Church, use us, we pray, to further your kingdom. For Christ's sake. Amen.
Hymns
"Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days"
"Dear Jesus, In Whose Life I See"
"Bread Of The World"
