Robert Raikes was no fatalist. He saw a need for the children of Cloucester, England, to study the Bible. He used every talent he had to encourage the children who came to him for the study on Sunday mornings.
They came, and the idea spread throughout the country.
Now, there are Sunday Schools in nearly all churches in all the nations of the world where it is permitted.
Actually, the public school system grew out of it, especially in America.
On Mr. Raikes' monument in London, England, are engraved these words:
"I said, 'Can anything be done?'
A voice said, 'Try.'
I did try and lo! What hath God wrought!"
The Bible no longer needs to be a closed book for children, because of what Mr. Raikes did.
