Purpose Statement: As an especially privileged nation, we are a notoriously overfed population, which leads to the usual sins associated with luxury.
Luke 16:19-31 is excellent and Amos 4:1-3 is poignant regarding overeating and neglect of the hungry. The introduction could commence with facts and figures on the world's hungry, including those in our own communities.
After a statement concerning how there is nothing wrong about enjoying good food, for the following reasons we need to ask God to forgive us our daily bread because:
a. We too often take our food abundance for granted.
b. We waste food. At restaurants, church dinners, banquets, etc., I look around and am appalled at how often people leave most of the food on their plates. I wonder how we got to be so overweight. My wife says, "They eat junk food at home."
c. We eat too much. We are jeopardizing our health with how much we eat, as well as what we eat.
d. We forget the starving.
e. We try to forget the starving.
f. We "get tired of hearing about the starving." This is one thing a Christian cannot afford to do: get tired of hearing about anyone in need.
