Theme: God Promises A Ruler From Bethlehem
Call To Worship
Leader: My heart praises the Lord;
People: my soul is glad because of God my Savior.
Leader: His name is holy.
People: He shows mercy to those who honor him.
Collect
Lord God, through your prophet of old you promised that the Messiah would come from Bethlehem and that he would rule with strength. Today we gather in preparation for the celebration of the birth of the Child of Bethlehem some 2,000 years ago. We praise you, Almighty God, for the coming of Jesus into the world, and our souls are glad because our Savior rules in our hearts with power and strength. Thanks be to you, Heavenly Father. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
God, in our eagerness to celebrate the coming of Jesus into the world, we often overlook the importance of his life, death, and resurrection. Forgive us, we pray, and help us in this time of worship to renew our commitment to the living Lord of our lives. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Lord Jesus, with these gifts we join with your followers throughout the world in our efforts to serve you and show your love to people everywhere. Bless them and us, we pray, that your kingdom may come and your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.
Hymns
"The People That In Darkness Sat"
"Watchman, Tell Us Of The Night"
"Love Divine, All Loves Excelling"
Fourth Sunday Of Advent
Second Lesson: Hebrews 10:5-10
Theme: The Supreme Sacrifice
Call To Worship
Leader: As we come to worship the Almighty, we do not come with sacrifices to appease a distant God.
People: No! We come to praise "God With Us," and give thanks for the coming of Jesus to show us what God expects of us.
Leader: What does the Lord require of you?
People: To do what is just, to show constant love, and to live in humble fellowship with our God.
All: Praise be to God!
Collect
O Lord, our God, the time draws near when we celebrate your coming while the world in solemn stillness awaits the advent of your intervention. Help us to catch the significance of the Baby Jesus whose lowly birth signaled a new day for all the world. Empower us as we grasp the full meaning of "Immanuel -- God With Us" that we may be your instruments in spreading the Good News throughout the world. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, the forces of war, hate, and enmity continue to ravage the earth, and have invaded even the sanctity of Jesus' birthplace. Each one of us must bear some of the responsibility, for we have not been as eager or willing to witness to your will for humanity as those who seek to build their own kingdoms. Forgive us, we pray, and by the power of your Holy Spirit make each of us an ardent advocate of your kingdom. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Lord, we know that you do not desire offerings meant to purchase our forgiveness, so we bring these gifts as tokens of our gratitude for the great gift of your Son, Jesus Christ. Bless these gifts, we pray, and use them in the telling of the Good News throughout the world. Amen.
Hymns
"Lo, He Comes With Clouds Descending"
"Love Divine, All Loves Excelling"
"Break Forth, O Living Light Of God"
Fourth Sunday Of Advent
Gospel Lesson: Luke 1:39-45
Theme: Rejoice At The News Of Jesus' Birth
Call To Worship
All the world rejoices at the news of Jesus' coming. To those who believe the infant born in Bethlehem is truly Immanuel -- God With Us -- the news brings us not only joy but a sense of awesome responsibility. Come, let us rejoice together as well as rededicating ourselves to be faithful followers of Jesus, the Son of God.
Collect
Heavenly Father, our hearts are filled with gladness and gratitude that you have revealed yourself to us through your Son, Jesus Christ. As we celebrate his birth so long ago, help us to experience anew the fact that with his coming you have revealed yourself as a loving father who is with us even now. Through our worship, strengthen again our desire to be used by you in the building of your kingdom. In Jesus'Êname we pray. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, in the excitement of the holidays we often forget that these are indeed holy days. Burn in our hearts the real reason we celebrate Jesus' birth, that we may be so filled with thanksgiving and joy that your Spirit may work through us to make Jesus known to all whose lives we touch. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
O God, what gift can we bring that is worthy of the Christ Child? With these offerings we present ourselves to be used by you to let others know of the wonders of your love. Amen.
Hymns
"As Pants The Hart For Cooling Streams"
"O Word Of God Incarnate"
"While Shepherds Watched Their Flock"
