Object: a check with your name written on it and a gift that you received from someone who loves you
Good morning, boys and girls. This morning I want to tell you a little bit about the way God feels toward you and me. Do you like to know how other people feel about you? I do, especially when I think that they like me. I am not so sure that I want to hear from the people who don't like me. Well, God likes you. As a matter of fact, he loves you, and I want to tell you a little bit about that love.
I suppose most of you know that I get paid for working. That's right, at the end of each month the treasurer comes up to me and gives me my paycheck and says, "Here is your paycheck, Pastor. You earned it." Now there is a very important word in what the treasurer said. The word is "earned." Do you know what that means? (wait for response) When you earn something it means that you worked for it. Your dad earns his paycheck. He worked hard to get what someone paid him. Your mom earns her paycheck. She, too, works hard to get it.
Now I have something else with me this morning that I am sure you all recognize. (hold up some things that you received as gifts) Can you tell me what this is? (let them identify each object) Do you think that I earned this? (wait for answers) I could have earned it, but I didn't. I never worked the first minute for this. Do you know why? Someone gave it to me as a gift. But not just any someone. No, sir, this is a very special gift because my daughter gave it to me. This is a gift of love.
This is the way that God cares for us. This is the way he makes us a part of his world. While we live on earth, he loves us, and after we leave the earth, he loves us, and he gives us the gift of life with love. We don't earn our life with him. He doesn't pay us off with life, but rather he gives it to us with love. It is a free gift just like this gift of love that I received from my daughter. She gave it to me with love, and expected nothing in return. That is the way God loves us. He would love us if we did nothing for him just because he cares so much for us.
