Gifts For God

Matthew To Revelation
Object: a box of candy, some flowers, a piece of jewelry
Good morning, boys and girls. I thought that since this is Sunday morning and it is such a nice warm day, we should do something for our God who made it this way. I have thought a lot about what we might do for God, and I cannot decide what would be the best kind of gift. Do any of you have some ideas of what we could give God on this Sunday? (let them answer) What would you like to have if someone were going to give you a gift today? (let them answer) We should have just the right kind of gift if we are giving to God. I did bring a few things along to help us think. I have a box of candy. I always like candy and I thought that maybe God would like the same kind that I like. What do you think about giving candy to God? (let them answer)
You don't like that idea? How about some flowers? These are just beautiful at this time of year. We could give God some wonderful flowers, or even a plant if you think he would keep them watered. Do you like the idea of giving flowers? (let them answer) You don't think that God would like either as a gift from us?
I have one more thought. I have this beautiful piece of jewelry. It has been in my family for years and people just love to look at it and they always tell me that they wish they had a piece of jewelry that looked like this. Do you think God would wear my old family jewelry? (let them answer) The answer is still no. What do you want to give to God that will help him remember you? (let them answer) Don't you have any suggestions? You see, if we can give God a gift, then he will owe us a favor. I think it would be pretty nice to know that God owed me something, don't you? (let them answer)
I am really trying to trick you. We can't give gifts to God, can we? God doesn't take gifts from us, and he has never owed anything to anyone. God shares his world with us and everything that is in the world belongs to him, including you and me. We belong to God, and we cannot give him candy, flowers, jewelry. All of these things belong to him, and he made them.
But we can give God one thing that is very important to him and to everyone else. The one thing we can give God is our love, and show him how very special our love is to him.
Maybe the next time you hear someone talking about owing money or a favor, you will think about the day we tried to think of something that we could give to God so that he would owe something to us. Then you will remember how impossible it was and how the only thing we had to give was our love. And God thinks that our love is the most important thing there is to give to him. We don't have to worry about giving anything else. What we do and how we act will show our love. God bless you very much.
