Object: some sacks of garbage and some clip clothespins
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to learn a great lesson, one that we all hope will be the answer for everyone in the world who does not believe in Jesus this very moment.
First of all, I am going to pass out some clothespins to pinch our noses so that we will not smell what I brought with me this morning. (put a clothespin on every child's nose) Now, I am going to show you what I brought with me this morning. (bring out the garbage) Do you know what this is that I have in the bags? (let them answer) That's right, garbage. Have you ever seen sacks of garbage in church before? I haven't either.
But, did you know that there are a lot of people in this country who think that garbage can provide energy for us? One man even ran his car on garbage that he made into a kind of gasoline. Other people think that it can be used to heat our homes. Garbage! Of course, it would not be able to smell like this to run our cars or heat our homes, but wouldn't it be wonderful if we could use all of our garbage for something useful like heat or fuel? Of course it would. Even something as bad as garbage can be made into something good and powerful.
Garbage isn't the only thing that can turn from bad to good. There was a man by the name of Saul who worked and worked to get rid of every Christian. He was worse than garbage. He thought that he was doing God a favor by getting rid of Christians. He would hunt them like hunters hunt animals and, when he caught them, he would find ways to have them beaten or even killed. It was awful.
But one day, while Saul was on his way after some more Christians, Saul saw Jesus in a vision. Jesus spoke to Saul in such a way that Saul never forgot it. It was really quite an experience. For a while Saul was blind, but that soon passed. Saul believed in what happened and in the voice that spoke to him, and he became a Christian like the ones he had been hunting. As a matter of fact, when Saul started over as a Christian, he changed his name to Paul and became a great missionary for Jesus. When Paul went somewhere, the people came out to see how one man could change from such a hunter to such a lover of God.
Paul was almost like garbage that becomes energy. The way he acted as a hunter no one could stand to be around him. But when he was changed into energy, people were thrilled to be around him. Maybe when you see your next sack of garbage, you will think of the way Saul was changed to Paul, and you will also pray to be just like him.
