God the vinedresser; Jesus the vine; we the branches

Pastoral Invitation to the Celebration
One pastor began this way:
A quote from Teillard de Chardin, "Joy is the most infallible sign of the presence of God." (source unknown) What sign do you bring to worship today?
Continue with this litany between pastor and ministers:
Pastor:
God loves the world.
Right side: Alleluia!
Left side: Hurray!
Pastor:
God calls us to celebrate the good news of Christ.
Right side: Alleluia!
Left side: Hurray!
Pastor:
Glorious things God has done for us, to us, with us, through us, around us.
Right side: Alleluia!
Left side: Hurray!
Pastor:
Joy is ours, because we are Christ's.
All: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! (source unknown, revised)
The Act of Recognizing our Humanness and The Act of Receiving New Life
Suggestion:
Introduce the confession with these words from e. e. cummings (source unknown): "To be nobody but myself in a world which is doing its best, night and day to make me similar to everybody else, means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting."
Perhaps you will want to print this in the order of worship, and invite the people to think about it silently for five minutes.
Then, for the assurance, conclude with the words, "To stay on top of that battle brings joy. We stay on top of it, because Christ first won it, for all time."
For especially courageous, ask two or three, on the spot, or, ahead of time, to share how they stay on top of it.
Message with the Children of All Ages
Try this:
Bring a vine into the chancel, a healthy vine and some dead branches that you had cut off several days before. Talk about what goes into a healthy plant. Jesus provides the vitamins and calories, the ingredients for making us green, living things, loaded with fruitfulness, laden with usefulness.
Proclamation of the Word
Suggestion:
The passage easily divides into three sections:
I. I am the vine.
II. You are the branches.
III. My Father is the Vinedresser.
Topic:
Blossoming Branches or Dry Sticks.
To live the good news, we need to know Christ.
We cannot live or present the gospel second-hand.
You may want to use this example: Calvin Coolidge was to make a speech one day; but the newspapers weren't to receive a copy of it until after he gave it. However, one newspaperman knew Coolidge so well that he wrote the speech before it were given, and had it printed. It was almost identical. He knew Coolidge as we need to know Christ.
How well do we know Christ? How will we know more about Christ this coming year?
Stewardship Challenge
Try this:
The stewardship of being branches. One pastor tells of a boy from Poland who played the piano, came to America to live. Later, he was drafted, went to Korea, and was injured seriously. The doctor said that he would have to amputate the young man's arms, to which the young man said, "That's all right; I have the music inside."
Charge to the Congregation
Suggestion:
Conclude with the Scripture; and then, May Christ harvest a good crop in your life this coming year, month, week, day. For the only life worth celebrating is what we give away, for the right reasons.
