Call To Worship
Come, let us worship the God of Abraham and our God, too.
Let us give thanks to God who keeps his promises.
Let us praise the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our Father, too.
Collect
Heavenly Father, we come into your presence this morning with praise and thanksgiving. We know that we have been blessed in many ways. Make us mindful that like Abraham we are blessed in order to be a blessing. Give us strength and courage to fulfill our responsibilities. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Almighty God, you have made us new persons in Christ, but how often we forget and live according to our old ways. Forgive us, we pray, and through the power of your Holy Spirit enable us to walk blameless before you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Hymns
"The God Of Abraham Praise"
"Great Is Thy Faithfulness"
Second Sunday In Lent
Second Lesson: Romans 4:13-25
Theme: The Example Of Abraham
Call To Worship
Come, let us give glory to God that like Abraham of old we might grow strong in our faith.
Collect
Eternal God, through faith Abraham believed that he would be the father of many nations according to your covenant. We come this morning as inheritors of that promise, and mindful that we are called to be a part of making it happen. Stir us by the power of your Holy Spirit that we may go forth from this time of worship determined to bring your Light and your Word to the nations of the world. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Heavenly Father, we thank you this morning for the gift of love, and most especially your love for us. Forgive us when we doubt the power of that love, and try to live by our own strength alone. Help us to dare to live victorious lives in the midst of defeat, joyful lives in the presence of sorrow, and in all things may our lives bear witness to the power and the presence of your love. Amen.
Hymns
"Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah"
"O Jesus, I Have Promised"
Second Sunday In Lent
Gospel Lesson: Mark 8:31-38
Theme: Cost Of Discipleship
Call To Worship
We have gathered together to worship God whose only Son gave his life for us.
We have come to turn our minds and thoughts away from human things that we might concentrate on divine things.
May God speak to each of us this morning according to our needs. Amen.
Collect
O Lord, may we hear your admonition to Peter when you said to him, "Satan, get away from me," as a warning to us not to resist your will because it does not agree with our view of worldly goals and ambitions. Strengthen our determination to seek first your kingdom. We pray in Jesus's name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we confess that when we hear you talk about suffering and dying we tend to draw back and question the cost of discipleship. Forgive us, we pray, and give us a new understanding of what it means to be totally committed to you and your gospel. Amen.
Hymns
"Take Up Thy Cross"
"Where He Leads Me"
Come, let us worship the God of Abraham and our God, too.
Let us give thanks to God who keeps his promises.
Let us praise the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our Father, too.
