Call To Worship
God finds it difficult, if not impossible, to avoid being compassionate. God does not toss us out when our lives turn to shambles but returns us to the potter's house. God is ever ready to provide the tools for the reworking of our lives. Let us praise this compassionate and hopeful God.
Collect
Whenever we place ourselves into your hands, O God, we replace despair with hope, hurt with healing, and decline with refinement. We are grateful, O God, for your continued and compassionate interest in us. Through Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
You know where we need healing, O God. Help us, also, to know. You know where our lives need reshaping. Help us, also, to become aware. You know what is valuable about us. Help us, also, to esteem and to hone the promise of our being. Amen.
53C Hymns

"Healing Christ, Shine On Me" Tune: ST. OLAF'S1
"Have Thine Own Way, Lord" Tune: ADELAIDE OR "O God, As With A Potter's Hand" Tune: WINSTON-SALEM
Proper 18
Sunday between September 4 and September 10 inclusive
Second Lesson: Philemon 1-21
Theme: A Good Work Begun
Call To Worship
When we start a good work, let us plan to bring it to completion. When snags damage our hopes, let us perceive beyond the rough to the end goal. When what we attempt to do is worthy of our energy, let us keep the original blueprint in mind and draw it into shape with the conviction of inner sight.
Collect
You, O God, provide us courage to proceed with our living. You offer the will to overcome when we falter. You give us the tenacity to endure when obstacles threaten to overwhelm us. To you, O God, we give praise. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
When unforeseen events muddy once clear ideas, encourage us, O God, to draw upon the goodwill of those who share our aspirations. Let us, in turn, offer support and reassurance to the honorable endeavors of our neighbors. In the spirit of Christ. Amen.
53C Hymns1
"For The Faithful Who Have Answered" Tune: OMNI DIE
"In God, My Faithful God" Tune: AUF MEINEN LIEBEN GOTT
"Today Your Mercy Calls Us" Tune: ANTHES
Proper 18
Sunday between September 4 and September 10 inclusive
Gospel: Luke 14:25-33
Theme: Requirements Of Discipleship
Call To Worship
What makes the requirements of discipleship so stringent? In these times, we have a ready supply of excuses as convincing as those of persons evading discipleship in Jesus' day. Yet still and always, God calls us to a higher life, to a nobler spirit, and to a deeper commitment to what is right.
Collect
As your disciples, we want to be worthy of the task you set before us, O God. We want to finish what we start without denigration of you. We want to honor a responsibility to which we agree. Help us balance our hopes with reality so we will not be afraid to trust ourselves. For your sake. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Forgive us, O God, when we tire of trying to be worthy disciples of Jesus' precepts. Refresh us in wanting to live a better life, to treat others in a respectful manner, and to make a constructive difference in the rest of the world. Keep nudging us, O God, to be your partners in the service of humanity. For the sake of Christ. Amen.
53C Hymns1
"Called As Partners In Christ's Service" or "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling" Tune: BEECHER
"When I Survey The Wondrous Cross" Tune: HAMBURG
"In The Cross Of Christ I Glory" Tune: RATHBUN or TOMTER
