Call to Worship
Pastor:
As we journey through life, we cannot avoid the threat of fear and danger.
People:
Everyday we are reminded that life is uncertain and on the edge of destruction.
Pastor:
But God is certain to be with us to remove the fear, and overcome the danger.
People:
Yes, God always makes a way for us to march forward with joy, singing his praises!
Collect
Almighty God, who guides us through the difficulties in life with the certainty of your presence and protection: Grant us peace and solitude with the assurance that life with its stress, cannot defeat the power of your love. Thus may we journey through life focusing our energies on following you, undaunted by the empty threats of a temporal world. In Christ's name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Forgive us, O God, when we let fear blind us to your hand leading us through life. Grant us the faith and commitment to trust you for direction and protection; that we may experience the joy of living in the shelter of your protective love. Hear us for Jesus' sake. Amen.

PROPER 14

Second Lesson: Romans 9:1-5
Theme:
A concern for Jews to accept Jesus
Call to Worship
Pastor:
Jesus was born a Jew in the flesh, but many Jews did not receive him as Savior.
People:
The are still God's children, and are therefore to be included in God's plan of salvation.
Pastor:
We share Paul's concern for them, and cannot exclude them from God's love; nor can we cease to pray for their salvation.
People: We pray that all descendants of Abraham may accept the love of God in Jesus Christ.
Collect
O loving Father, whose love for your chosen race is still the source of their salvation: Grant us the mercy and the compassion to pray for all your children to be included in your church; that your name may be praised by all, through your Son Jesus the Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Father, we know those of the Jewish Faith believe in you without regard to Jesus as Savior. But we are confused about our relationship with them. Forgive us when we have either considered them saved without Christ, or else unsavable because of their errors. Renew us in a mission of compassion and concern; that your love for them may yet bring them salvation. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Christ Is the World's True Light"
"Heralds of Christ"
"The Church's One Foundation"

Jesus walks on the water
Call to Worship
Pastor:
Our mission as the church is often like a ship, tossed on the sea.
People:
Church history has recorded many storms; but Christ always brings a calm, encouraging his followers.
Pastor:
We have our bouts with fear and discouragement, too. But we can be sure our Lord will see us through.
People:
We worship Jesus, the Son of God who is with us in all our struggles, bringing peace to our souls.
Collect
Father of grace and power, whose Son gives victory over life's most violent storms: Strengthen our faith as we commit ourselves to the ministry of your church; that we may be secure in our relationship with you, and true to our mission in our world. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We love your church, Father, because we enjoy its security in a life of insecurity. But even within your church we experience fear when we give thought to the tremendous forces which sweep over us as if we were defenseless. Forgive us when we have surrendered our faith to the forces of evil. Keep us mindful of your presence and power, that we may rejoice with you in the victory of your church. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
