Going To A Wedding
Children's sermon
THE BIG INFLUENCE OF SMALL THINGS
Exegetical Aim: We must be appropriately prepared for the great Kingdom party.
Props: Outfits for various individuals: a doctor, a construction worker, a swimmer (flippers and a snorkel would work well), and a tennis player (or other athletic outfit). Use a few accessories for each outfit. Adapt according to your resources.
Lesson: Good morning. (response) How many of you have been to a wedding? (response) What happens at a wedding? (response) Weddings are really fancy events. I have been invited to a wedding and I have been wondering what I should wear. I brought this. Show the doctor's outfit and accessories. Is this what I should wear? (response) What's wrong with this? (response) So I can't wear a doctor's outfit. What about this? Show the flippers and snorkel. (response) Why, what's wrong with this? (response) What would happen if I showed up with flippers on? (response) Maybe it's a swimming wedding party? (response) Okay, what about these clothes? Show the tennis outfit. Are these the right ones? (response) Why not? (response)
Application: Jesus told a story about a guy who went to a great wedding party and he didn't have the right clothes on. Do you know what they did to him? (response) They threw him out of the wedding. What do you think Jesus was trying to tell us in this story? (response)
You know what I think he was telling us? I think he was telling us that we all have been invited to a great wedding party and we have to be ready. We have to put on our best. We can't wear our doctor's clothes and pretend like we are some big important person; we can't wear our tennis outfit and pretend like we are greater than everybody else; and we can't wear our flippers and be disrespectful. So what kind of clothes are we going to wear? (response) Let me give you a hint. Jesus wasn't talking about clothes. We are going to God's great wedding party. What do you think we are supposed to wear? (faith, goodness, love, etc.) Help the children arrive at these answers. Yes those are the kind of clothes that God wants us to wear.
Let's Pray: Dear God. Your children here are going to wear their best clothes to your great wedding party: List here what the children said. I can't wait to see them there. Amen.

Philippians 4:1--9
Don't Worry
Exegetical Aim: God's provision for those he loves.
Props: A flower, a seed, a shovel, a sandwich, and lipstick.
Lesson: I have something today that is very pretty. Would you like to see it? (response) What do you think it might be? (response) Well, let's see. Hold the flower up for everyone to see. Do you like it? (response) It's pretty, isn't it? (response) This kind of flower is called ___________. What happened before this could be a flower? (a seed was planted) Hold up the seed. Yes, a seed was planted. Then what happened? Hold up the shovel next to the seed, as if the seed is holding the shovel. Did the seed have to work real hard every day? (response) No? Hold the sandwich next to the flower, as if the flower is eating the sandwich. Did the flower have to worry about getting enough to eat or drink? (response) No? Hold the lipstick next to the flower's petals, as if the flower is putting on lipstick. Did the flower become pretty because it took care of itself? (response) No? Of course not! Who took care of this flower, making it grow into something beautiful? (response) Yes, God did.
Application: Jesus reminded the people that God would take care of them even more than God takes care of the flowers. And the Apostle Paul said this, "Do not worry about anything, but by prayer let your requests be known to God." In other words, if God takes care of the flowers, and makes them beautiful without them really doing any work, then he will care for you even more. So there's no need to worry about life, because God will hear us when we pray and will see to our needs. So the next time you see a flower, remember God will take care of you.
Let's Pray: Thank you, God, for taking care of us, and for letting us know that we do not need to worry about anything. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
